The Lady's Sash
Zhao Shizhen, the garrison general of Huaiyang during the Ming dynasty, has hired a scholar Lu Shike to be the homeschool teacher of his son Xilang. Ruxiang, the wife of Zhao, was a courtesan. Her foster mother Ru Sanniang moved into the family with Ruxiang. Ruxiang is happy to see Xilang making good progress with his studies. She praises Shike for being a talented teacher. Shizhen becomes suspicious of his wife’s secret crush on the Shike. One day, the teacher catches a cold. Xilang takes a blanket to keep his teacher warm. The sash used to tie up the blanket is mistakenly left behind on the bed of the guest room. Shizhen visits the teacher and becomes furious when he sees the sash – he misunderstands it as a sign of Ruxiang’s infidelity. He returns to his room and forces Ruxiang to visit the guest room in the middle of the night. The teacher misinterprets the midnight visit as a flirtatious behaviour. He leaves a note to condemn the act and leaves the guest room through the window. Shizhen breaks into the guest room and understands from the note that he has blamed his wife for the wrong reason. He keeps the sash as a reminder of his fault. The Xiongnu tribe is invading the country. Shizhen is tasked to take down the enemy’s camp on his own. Staying the night at an inn, Shizhen is almost murdered by the wicked innkeeper. Shizhen beheads the innkeeper, puts the sash around the body and leaves. The case constable mistakes the victim as Shizhen because of the sash. During his investigation of the murder, the county magistrate sees Zhao Qin, a commanding officer, comforting Ruxiang at home. He misjudges the murder as an outcome of the adulterous relationship between Ruxiang and Qin. He locks up the two persons in jail.
