A Regretful Story in the Tang Palace

 

The sad and beautiful love story of Emperor Xuanzong of Tang and Consort Yang has stood the test of time.  The theatrical form of the story is still constantly produced.  One of the most well-known part of their story is depicted through the poem The Song of Everlasting Regret by Bai Juyi – “High up in the sky, we would be lovebirds; On earth, we would be intertwined vines” became timeless lines that celebrate true love.

The Blindness of Li Xian

 

The story has two themes.  The virtues and the faithfulness of courtesan Li Xian is commended.  The highly educational story also encourages those who have done wrong to repent - diligence and hard work will become the seeds of success.

The Affair between Lü Bu the Hero and Diao Chan the Beauty

 

The story depicts how a witty lady like Diaochan turns out to be manipulated in politics.  Who would understand her sorrows and melancholy?

 

Yuen May

 

Yuen May began writing Cantonese pop song lyrics since the 1970s.  The artistes she worked with prominent singers of the time who received a number of Gold Albums.  Amongst these works, An Enchanted Dream of Rivers and Mountains and The Palace of Eternal Life received the CASH Golden Sail Most Performed Works Awards in 1994 and 2002 from the Composers and Authors Society of Hong Kong.  Yuen May subsequently turned her interests to composing Cantonese operatic songs and Cantonese opera, working with Cantonese opera stars.

 

During 1985-95, Yuen May hosted a number of radio programmes.  Delving into the history, characters and culture of Cantonese opera works with her unique insights, her programmes were highly popular.  Yuen May collaborated with TV programmes, using Cantonese Naamyam and folk tunes to introduce Hong Kong’s scenic attractions, heritage and relics.  The works of Yuen May were often used as theme songs in TV series and films.

 

In 1996, Yuen May and her husband emigrated to Canada.  She often writes and compiles Cantonese operas for her acquaintances in the performance circle as well as writes gospel music.
