The Butterfly Goblet
Tian Yuchuan, son of the prefect of Jiangxia prefecture, encounters an old fisherman Hu Mingheng at a tavern on Turtle Hill. The old fisherman has caught a strange fish with a human head and the body of a fish. Coveting this novelty, Lu Shihuan, son of the Governor, tries to snatch the fish by force and ends up seriously injuring the old fisherman. Standing up for the old man, Tian Yuchuan has injured Lu Shihuan. Realising that he is getting into big trouble, Yuchuan flees right away. The old fisherman escapes back to his boat. Before he dies, he tells his daughter Hu Fengjiao what has happened. Fengjiao is devastated, and it so happens that Tian Yuchuan has also found his way to the boat in his flight, and the two young persons meet. To repay Yuchuan for helping her father, Fengjiao lets him hide in the boat to escape from the manhunt. The two fall in love; Fengjiao saves Yuchuan with her wit, and in return Yuchuan gives her his family heirloom, a butterfly goblet, as a betrothal pledge.
Lu Shihuan has killed the old fisherman while trying to snatch the strange fish, but he himself is killed too. General Tang Yang receives the order to hunt down the murderer, Yuchuan, but to no avail. So he arrests Yuchuan’s father, the chief official of Jiangxia prefecture, instead. At the same time, a decree comes from the Emperor and Governor Lu is sent on an expedition. Somewhere along the route, he is helped by Yuchuan and wins the battle. As a fugitive, Yuchuan has changed his name to Lei Chuanzhou. In appreciation of his contribution to the victory, Governor Lu wants to marry his daughter to Yuchuan. The situation turns out to be very complicated, with love and relationships all getting entangled: Yuchuan is the murderer of Governor Lu’s son, yet he is also his son-in-law; he has a nuptial commitment to Hu Fengjiao, but Governor Lu has promised his daughter to him as wife-to-be. How are all these going to be resolved at the end?
