Executing His Own Son to Demonstrate Patriotism from The Tragedy of Two Patriotic Brothers

The incompetence of the emperor of the Ming Dynasty causes domestic troubles and aggravates external threats. The family of General Zhong Yujun, who is guarding the frontier, is loyal to the country. His elder son, Xiaoquan lead the troops to the battlefield. Although he encounters an ambush, he was rescued by his brother Xiaoyi.

The emperor's father-in-law speaks ill of Xiaoquan, and orders him to return to the capital immediately with a gold plate. Xiaoquan's father, also fooled by the rumour that his son's recklessness is the cause of the invasion, raises his sabre to Xiaoquan. The emperor's father-in-law comes with an order from the emperor to execute Xiaoquan. Although Xiaoyi has finally secured evidence of the father-in-laws treachery, it is too late—his brother has been executed. Xiaoyi kills the culprit with his sabre to avenge his brother's death.

Sijie Lectures the Son from A Scholar Becomes Rich

Yu Fengsheng, a scholar, fall in love with a courtesan called Hua Yanhong. He promises to marry her after he has passed the imperial examination. Later they say goodbye at a riverside. He gives her a round fan made of gold as a keepsake, and the two vows to spend the rest of their lives together.

Fengsheng comes first in the imperial examination and returns home in glory. Sijie, who brought up Fengsheng, and Mingyue forge a letter and return the keepsake to break off the engagement. Yanhong is so grieved by the thought that Fengsheng has betrayed her that she decides to become a nun.

While Sijie and Mingyue is praying for Fengsheng in a nunnery, they catch sight of a poem written on the wall. Admiring the poet for her talent, Sijie wants to match Fengsheng and the poet together and asks the emperor for permission. It turns out that the poet is none other than Yanhongand Fengsheng is overjoyed. The story resolves in the marriage of the lovers.

Forcing the Widow to Re-marry from Snow in Summer

Poor girl Dou Er sells herself to a woman, Cai, who weds her son Changzong to the girl. They become a loving couple. After a time, Changzong travels to the capital to take the imperial examination. Zhang, who has long coveted Dou for her beauty, hires a man to kill Changzong. The attempt fails, but word travels back to Dou and Cai that Changzong is dead.

After several defiance of visits and marriage proposals, Zhang tries to kill Cai, but kill his own mother mistakenly. Zhang accuses Cai of murdering his mother and bribes the magistrate into extorting a confession through torture. Fearing that her mother-in-law will not be able to withstand the prosecution, Dou takes responsibility for the crime instead.

On the day of her execution, in the middle of summer, an amazingly heavy snow descends. Changzong returns as inspector general. Noticing the unseasonable snow as an omen of extraordinary injustice, Changzong personally retries the case and exonerates Dou while bringing Zhang to justice. The family is happily reunited.

Releasing Cao Cao from The Huarong Pass

Before the Battle of the Red Cliffs, the calculations of Zhuge Liang reveal that Cao Cao will be defeated at Huarong; but he is not supposed to die in this battle. So, Zhuge sends Guan to guard Huarong Pass.

As Zhuge anticipated, Cao Cao gets defeated at Wulin and retreats to Huarong Pass. Along his way, Cao Cao laughs at Zhuge Liang and Zhou Yu for not having the necessary strategy and fails to deploy troops at critical locations. Zhao Zilong and Zhang Fei come out successively to resist Cao Cao. At third time, Guan Yu guard at the narrow pass of Huarong. The Cao army is too weary to fight any more after repeated attacks. Cao Cao has no choice but to listen to his advisors to personally beg Guan Yu for release. Guan Yu remembers Cao Caos favour and releases him, who eventually returns to Jiangling.
