Winning Playwright: Li Kim-hung
Fiend Battle describes folk wedding customs. It is the back story of the “three letters and six rituals”; the opening of a red umbrella for the bride when she leaves her maiden home; placing a red fabric before the bride steps out of her wedding sedan chair; throwing rice to deter the curse of the Sun Rooster; and different rituals for various guests, etc.
Floral Immortal Peach Blossom and the flower protector Zhou Qian are destined lovers and she is killed by Turtle Demon, who is attracted by her. Zhou Qian and his master Fire Dragon know Peach Blossom and Willow, who is also killed, have reincarnated as mortals and are named Ren Taohua and Peng Liunian. Zhou Qian descends to the mortal world and transforms himself into a fortune teller called Zhou Gong to search them and catch Turtle Demon who has stolen the five thunder balls from Fire Dragon. Floral Immortal Plum Blossom escapes death and avenges for her sisters. She descends to the mortal world to teach Taohua the skills of an immortal. Liunian meets Taohua and is taught the method for longevity at Xingjun Temple. Liunian receives 800 years of extra life and changes his name to Pengzu. Turtle Demon captures Zhou Gong and transforms himself into Zhou Gong, and forces Taohua to marry him. By fortune-telling calculations, Taohua knows that it is the day of “The Three Curses” on their wedding day, curses relating to heaven, earth, and happiness. With the help of her fellow floral immortals and Pengzu, she breaks the Three Curses successfully and rescues Zhou Gong. Fire Dragon captures Turtle Demon and brings him back to the heavenly court. The lovers have a happy reunion.
