War Romance
The border between Song and Liao is immersed in the confusion of wars during the Northern Song dynasty. Mei Yong and Long Xiang are military commanders of Song. They have lost contact with their families. Mei Hua, the daughter of Mei Yong, is adopted by the Dowager Empress Xiao. Eighteen years later, Mei Hua leaves the palace to hunt and meets Long Yun, the son of Long Xiang, by chance. The two fall in love at first sight. Mei Hua’s wet nurse also reunites with her family. When Mei Hua finds out about her origin, she tries very hard to convince the Dowager Empress Xiao, who is eventually moved by Mei Hua’s determination. Xiao calls a stop to the war and signs a peace treaty with Liao. Mei Hua and Long Yun wed in the end.

Liu Zhang Goes Down the Hill
Fan Jiao is the niece of the Dowager Empress. She wants to become Empress so much that she plots to murder Lady Yuan, the mistress of Zhaoyang Hall, with her uncle Lu Yi. Their plot slips and fails, but Lu Yi does not plead guilty. Instead, he launches a coup, using the excuse of helping the Dowager Empress to “eliminate traitors”. Emperor Hui is forced to kill himself at the royal mausoleum. After learning of the coup, Liu Heng and Liu Ze, members of the royal family, lead their troops to the capital city. Liu Zhang, the youngest son of Liu Ze who has been lost for more than ten years, has just left his abode in the mountains to help restore the Han dynasty. Yet, he joins the Lu troop by mistake. Liu Heng loses the battle. Although Liu Ze knows Liu Zhang is his son, the father and son cannot reunite. Liu Ze is later captured by the Lu troop. Lu Yi forces Liu Zhang to interrogate Liu Ze for intelligence. Liu Ze righteously discredits the Lu troop, using a secret language to provoke Liu Zhang – who finally has an epiphany. With the help of the Prime Minister Chen Ping, the father and son finally reunite in jail. Knowing that he cannot escape from the jail and will only end up in death, Liu Ze kills himself to help Liu Zhang gain trust from the Lu troop. Liu Zhang gets hold of military power and waits for his chance to eliminate the enemies. Liu Heng and his affiliates make plans and retaliate. Liu Zhang takes the chance to crush the traitors and restore the Han dynasty.

How a Dead Cat was Substituted for a New-born Prince
The northern tribes are invading the border. Emperor Zhenzong of Song is leading the army at the frontline. When Lady Li of the West Palace gives birth to the crown prince, Empress Liu of the East Palace is anxious about losing the throne to a concubine. She plots with Guo Huai, who suggests swapping the crown prince with a skinned dead cat. Guo orders a palace maid Kouzhu to throw the new-born crown prince to the pond. Kou hesitates and tells the story to Chen Lin, who risks his own life to help rescue the crown prince and takes him to Lady Li, who raises him as her own. Empress Liu burns down the Palace of Lady Li and palace maid Kou comes to the rescue of Li. The Empress interrogates Kou and asks Chen Lin to beat her up. To protect the innocent crown prince, Kou kills herself by knocking her head at the corner of a table. Sixteen years later, Emperor Zhenzong returns from the battlefield. The Eighth Prince cleverly recommends Zhenzong to “adopt” his rescued son, Zhao Zhen. Zhao Zhen ascends the throne as Emperor Renzong in the end.
