The northern tribes are invading the border. Emperor Zhenzong of Song is leading the army at the frontline. When Lady Li of the West Palace gives birth to the crown prince, Empress Liu of the East Palace is anxious about losing the throne to a concubine. She plots with Guo Huai, who suggests swapping the crown prince with a skinned dead cat. Guo orders a palace maid Kouzhu to throw the new-born crown prince to the pond. Kou hesitates and tells the story to Chen Lin, who risks his own life to help rescue the crown prince and takes him to Lady Li, who raises him as her own. Empress Liu burns down the Palace of Lady Li and palace maid Kou comes to the rescue of Li. The Empress interrogates Kou and asks Chen Lin to beat her up. To protect the innocent crown prince, Kou kills herself by knocking her head at the corner of a table. Sixteen years later, Emperor Zhenzong returns from the battlefield.
