Playwright: Sun Kim-long
Su Xiaoxiao, a renowned courtesan from the Southern Song dynasty, is buried by the West Lake. This is also where her two unforgettable romances germinated. Throughout her tough life, she had strong affections for Ruan Yu and Bao Ren. Yet, her love never came to fruition. The two poetic and dream-like romances, in the end, are also buried by the West Lake. What could she have done otherwise?
Su Xiaoxiao is not only gifted and beautiful, she is also culturally and artistically merchants, dignitaries, poets and writers. Her admirers are eager to spend lavishly just to meet this famous courtesan. Yet, Su Xiaoxiao vows to remain chaste. One day, Xiaoxiao meets Ruan Yu, the son of the Prime Minister, by the West Lake. It is love at first sight. However, the newly appointed magistrate Meng Lang is mesmerised by the beauty of Xiaoxiao. He goes to the Prime Minister and accuses Ruan Yu for indulging in a decadent life because he is obsessed with Xiaoxiao. The Prime Minister is furious and forces Ruan Yu to marry someone else. Ruan Yu tries to run away from his father at night, but unfortunately dies during his escape. Shocked by the tragic news of her lover, Xiaoxiao misses Ruan Yu every night and is melancholic every day.
One day, Xiaoxiao visits the lake to ease her grief. She meets a handsome and talented scholar named Bao Ren. The two acquaintances tour around the lake and find an instant connection. Another love story begins. Xiaoxiao takes out all that she owns and convinces Bao Ren to sit at the Imperial Examination to obtain his well-deserved title. Yet, misfortunes never come singly. After Bao has left, Xiaoxiao falls ill and becomes weaker by the day. She lingers on and waits for the return of her lover, hoping to prove her discerning foresight. Unfortunately, Xiaoxiao passes away the same day when Bao Ren returns in triumph. The life of Xiaoxiao is indeed a cruel twist of fate.
