The Butterfly Dream of Zhuang Zhou Playwright: Yip Shiu-tak
It is the end of the Eastern Zhou dynasty. Zhuang Zhou, a sage of the Song state, fakes his own death from sudden illness to test the faithfulness of his wife Tian. Ten days later, when Tian is paying her respects at the grave, Xiong Sheng, an imperial grandson of the Chu state comes to visit. Tian and Xiong fall in love and promise themselves to each other, but good times never last. Xiong Sheng has a heart attack, which requires a remedy formulated with human brain and warm liquor. Tian goes to Zhuang Zhou's grave to break open his coffin and acquire the brain. She is shocked to see the revival of Zhuang Zhou and learns that Xiong Sheng is indeed an illusion created by Zhuang Zhou's magic. Tian is ashamed and kills herself. Zhuang Zhou plays the drum and sings. Laozi speaks to Zhuang Zhou and comments that butterflies are attracted by the fragrance of the flowers because it is their nature to love flowers. Love in the secular world is all but vain. Zhuang Zhou never marries again and becomes enlightened with the Great Dao.
