Red Shoes Solves the Mystery Case

 

Yang Liujiao, a widow in Suzhou, and her sister-in-law Su Yugui live at the house of the Su family and rely upon each other. Yang Liujiao feels lonely and commits adultery with Qin Sanfeng who is a clerk at the county’s government office; she even wants to marry him. The duo beheads the wife of Qin and buries her head under the white poplar tree at the government office. Qin puts Yang’s clothes, shoes and socks on his wife’s body and buries it by the bridge. The murderous knife is thrown into the bushes. The plan is to frame Yang’s sister-in-law as the murderer of Yang. Meng Song is the newly appointed prefectural magistrate. He falsely indicts murderous charges on Su Yugui and her lover Liu Ziqing, and gives them death penalty. Zuo Weiming, the prefectural magistrate of Changzhou, is in disbelief when he hears of the indictment of his student Liu Ziqing. He suspects there is something suspicious about the case. Using his official capacity, he stops the execution and requests a re-trial, using an embroidered red shoe as his first clue to continue the investigation. Yang Liujiao finds Zuo Weiming young and handsome, then gives him a flirtatious look. Zuo understands Yang’s intentions and tries to please her. Based on the suspicions of Yang, Zuo tracks down where the case begins and uncovers the head of the victim. The real killer is found. Justice is served for Yugui and Ziqing.

Merciless Sword under Merciful Heaven

 

Wei Chonghui is a descendant of Han Xin. The Han clan was denounced and killed by Queen Lu. The clan changed their family name to Wei and became diaspora. Chonghui, a young master of the family, is raised by Gui Yuchang. They live as hermits in the Purple Bamboo Forest. Lu Huailiang is ordered to chase and kill the descendants of the Han family. However, his daughter Lu Daoci is a childhood friend with Chonghui. Neither of them knows about the family feud between the Wei’s and the Lu’s. One day, an elderly member of the Wei’s visits and Chonghui learns of his origins. Yuchang gives him the merciless sword, which symbolises Chonghui will shoulder the responsibilities to restore the family’s honour from then on. The Wei’s started a battle against the barracks of Lu Huailiang. Huailiang and the King of Ji join up to defend. The King of Ji coerces Daoci to sneak into the barracks of the Wei’s and attempt to assassinate the chief commander of the Wei camp. As Chonghui and Daoci reunite at the military camp, they are faced with the dilemma between loyalty and family feud. For the sake of Daoci, Chonghui accepts the King of Ji’s proposal to surrender. The King of Ji wishes to seize the opportunity and swallow up the armies of the Wei’s and the Lu’s for an intended rebellion. Yuchang refuses to surrender. She leads the Wei army to defend against the King of Ji, but fails. Luckily, Chonghui comes to her rescue. Huailiang is regretful. He leads the Lu army and join up with the Wei’s to fight back at the King of Ji. Yuchang is badly injured. Before she passes away, she agrees to the marriage of Chonghui and Daoci. The family feud between Wei’s and Lu’s come to an end.

The Double-pearl Phoenix Hairpin

 

Gifted scholar Wen Bizheng is visiting a convent when he runs into Dingjin, the daughter of Huo Tianguan. Chaperoned by her maid Qiuhua, Dingjin is visiting the convent to worship. Wen picks up the double-pearl phoenix hairpin of Dingjin. To express his romantic feelings to Dingjin, Wen pretends to be an interpreter of fortune-telling sticks. He calls Sanniang his godmother and even sells himself off as a servant to the Huo family. Ding Hanchang has always wanted to express his romantic feelings to Dingjin, but he has no true knowledge. Yet, as he is the godson of the Duke Wei, he becomes a member of the Imperial Academy. Ding is ridiculed by Bizheng at the banquet. Seeing her hairpin, Dingjin misses her beau. Bizheng is requested by Tianguan to take flowers up to Dingjin. Qiuhua, the maid, teases Bizheng. She insists Bizheng must call her his sworn sister after obtaining official titles, or she would not play the role of matchmaker. To please the Duke, Tianguan betroths Dingjin to Hanchang. Dingjin and Qiuhua fake their death by burning down her chamber. The duo goes to the capital city to look for Bizheng. They wander around the capital city and encounter the old prime minister Liu Jing, who adopts her. Learning that Dingjin, the adopted daughter of Liu Jing, has painted the Emperor’s portrait on behalf of her father, the Emperor bestows the title of princess upon the talented young woman. Bizheng wins the top honours in the imperial examination but refuses to become the husband of the princess. He only finds out the princess is Dingjin at a toast. Yet, this has triggered Hanchang’s fight for Dingjin as his wife too. Bizheng betroths his sworn sister Qiuhua to Hanchang. The two couples ask the Emperor for permission to wed.
