The Story of an Unintended Tonsure

 

Scholar Zhang Chunlang is the only son of old grand counsellor Zhang Chongli.  With his extraordinary talents and handsome looks, Chunlang is much favoured by the royal family.  He is admired by Princess Shuangjiao, the only daughter of the emperor.  Suggested by Lord of Lu, a founder of the country, Chunlang becomes the fiancee of the Princess.  When Chunlang puts his visiting studies at Luoyang on hold and prepares to go back to the capital city to marry the Princess, he visits his childhood friend Monk Bankong at Qingyun Temple.  At the same time, Princess Shuangjiao is also visiting Qingyun Temple.  Out of curiosity, Chunlang disguises himself as a young monk to serve tea and get a glimpse of the Princess.  His cover is blown and almost gets him executed.  Luckily, the senior monk Facong asks for Chunlang’s mercy.  Chunlang is forced to become a monk, meaning the royal wedding cannot be held as planned.  At the palace, Princess Shuangjiao makes a scene.  Her kind queen mother is anxious and panicking.  Her father, the emperor, is indifferent to what happened.  The enthusiastic and humorous Lord of Lu takes the initiative and facilitates the Princess to resolve the situation.  However, both Chunlang and the Princess do not give in because of their own pride.  After the couple get to learn more and understand about each other, Princess Shuangjiao cuts her hair as an apology to Chunlang.  The couple becomes husband and wife in the end.

Wang Mang's Usurpation of the Han Throne

 

During late Western Han, Emperor Ping is young and weak.  The Prime Minister Wang Mang usurps, bringing an army to seize the throne.  Emperor Ping writes a decree and commands Wu Qiong and Qin Zhong, two important ministers, to take the crown prince Liu Xiu and escape from Chang’an.  The royal seal is given to Ma Cheng, a trusted minister, for safekeeping.  Wang Mang poisons Emperor Ping and calls himself king.  Risking his own life, Wu Qiong escorts the crown prince Liu Xiu to flee.  Before Wu Qiong passes away, he asks his sworn brother Qin Zhong to pass the heirloom loyalty sword of the Wu’s to his son Wu Han, reminding him to avenge for him by eliminating the treacherous and restoring the Han dynasty.  Wu Han and his mother are separated in their escape.  Wu Han is saved by a Taoist monk, who teaches him martial arts at Mount Kunlun.  Sixteen years later, Wu Han finishes his training.  As he descends from Mount Kunlun, Wu Han kills a fierce tiger and saves Wang Mang’s daughter Wang Lanying.  The two go to the capital city together.  Wang Mang has just begun recruiting talents.  With his superior martial skills, Wu Han is appointed as a high-rank officer and offered the hand of the princess.  Qin Zhong’s heart is still with the Han dynasty, and he sneaks into the inner court and discloses the origins of Wu Han.  Wu Han finds it very hard to believe.  Qin Zhong fails in his assassination of Wang Mang and is captured by Wu Han. Qin Zhong rides on the opportunity to cast a bone between Wang and Wu.  Wang Mang becomes sceptical with Wu Han, and commands him to guard a border city Tongguan; he also releases Qin Zhong.  Wu Han does not want his mother to stay nearby.  He goes to the temple and meets her.  The mother and son reunite.

Liu Xiu's Restoration of the Han Dynasty

 

Hoping to restore his father’s dynasty, crown prince Liu Xiu recruits soldiers and purchases horses at Nanyang.  One day, he sneaks into Tongguan and is met with danger at an inn.  Luckily, he is saved by the clever plot of Qin Zhong and the innkeeper.  Liu teams up with Qin Zhong to visit the house of Ma secretly.  Ma Cheng and his daughter are excited about the visit of Liu Xiu.  They want to pass the royal seal to Liu Xiu, which can help Liu summon military support to strike back at Wang Mang.  Ma Jiaju, the son of Ma Cheng, steals the seal and plans to present it to Wang Mang.  Jiaju’s younger sister Jiafeng rides a horse to chase him, but her persuasion does not work.  The siblings fight, and Jiaju is killed.  Jiafeng retrieves the seal. Hearing the news, Wu Han rushes to the scene.  Qin Zhong arrives during standstill and tries very hard to rescue Jiafeng, yet, he is captured instead.  Wu Han follows Jiafeng to her home and ties up Ma Cheng.  Wu Han also intends to snatch the seal for Wang Mang.  Mother Wu is furious, and she tells the story of their family with Ma Cheng and Qin Zhong, unfolding the origin of the loyalty sword, hoping that Wu Han can understand who is right and who is wrong, and turn his loyalty to the Han dynasty.  To convince Wu Han to break away from Wang Mang, Mother Wu orders Wu Han to kill Lanying with the sword.  Wu Han has no choice but to follow his mother’s order.  At the scripture hall, Lanying is praying for the family.  Wu Han finds it very hard to complete the killing, and Lanying does not want to end their love.  In order to help her husband fulfil his ambition, Lanying takes her own life with a sword.  Seeing what happened, Mother Wu also hangs herself.  Wu Han is in rage, and decides to stay loyal to Liu Xiu.  They both lead soldiers to fight back at the tyrant Wang Mang.  The Han dynasty is restored.
