An anthem of Jiangnan maiden's devoted love
A panoramic view of Zhejiang's folk marriage custom
The Dance Drama Grand Red Trousseaus ‧ Dream of a Maiden is inspired by the wedding custom of eastern Zhejiang 'Grand Red Trousseaus' which refers to the trousseaus for the brides which were carried by local large marching troupes. The troupes would also play musical instruments to spread the joy of the wedding. These luxurious and beautiful trousseaus, which included furniture and all kinds of daily necessities, were mostly in red and decorated with gold. The trousseaus also involved various traditional arts including woodcrafts, engraving art, lacquer art, ornate bucket-making craftsmanship and tailored clothing. The wedding custom was listed as a national intangible cultural heritage in 2008.
The story originates from the millennium-old wedding customs in Jiangnan (Southern China) and the history of Ningbo migrant workers who roamed around the country. The main plot follows a young couple living in an ancient town in Southern China during the late Qing and early republic era. It tells the romantic legend about the loyal and unchanging love of a lady from a wealthy family. Ayong and Yue'er grew up together and proclaim their mutual love as they reach adolescence. Ayong asks Yue'er to wait for his return and be his bride. The very words become the fabric for Grand Red Trousseaus ‧ Dream of a Maiden, which depicts how Yue'er yearns and waits for her everlasting love.
The dance drama has received a long list of honours, including the 11th National Construction of Spiritual Civilisation of 'Five "One" Project' Award, the 12th Zhejiang Construction of Spiritual Civilisation of 'Five "One" Project' Award, the 7th 'Lotus Cup' Dance Competition Excellent Production Award. It was shortlisted in the Excellent Production Prize of 'Cultural Charm of China', a foreign cultural exchange brand set up by the Central Propaganda Department and the Ministry of Culture. It has been staged 146 times in the most prestigious venues in the world, including the National Centre for the Performing Arts in China; Stadttheater Wiener Neustadt in Austria; Theatre Rouen in France; the David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center in the United States; the Bruce Mason Centre in Auckland, New Zealand; the State Theatre in Sydney, Australia, etc. In 2015, the dance drama was invited to perform in the 'Chinese Evening' at the International Innovation Trade Show in Russia which has since become a distinguished brand in China's foreign cultural exchange.
The running time of each performance is approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes without intermission.
Audience is strongly advised to arrive punctually. Latecomers and audiences who leave their seats during the performance will only be admitted to their own seats at a suitable break.
