Appreciating Classic Plays of the Northwest

Speaker: Wong Kin-ting

Northwestern China has been the thoroughfare to the Western Regions since ancient times – it was where merchants, travellers and cultures converge and interact.  Regional operas in the Shanxi, Shaanxi and Gansu area form a treasure of various opera genres.

Speaker Wong Kin-ting is a seasoned art critic, columnist, radio music programme presenter and a critic of Chinese opera. He is currently a board member of the International Association of Theatre Critics (Hong Kong) and arts advisor of the Hong Kong Arts Development Council.  Through the Bangzixi (clapper opera) of Shanxi and Shaanxi and the famous plays of the Long Opera genre, we will explore the world of regional operas that are unique to the great northwest of China.

Sands and Beyond – The Art of Dunhuang as a Source of Inspiration for Composers and Performers

Speakers: Law Wing-fai, Wong Chi-ching
Demonstration: Wong Chi-ching
Moderator: Cheung Pui-shan

'In the vast desert, plumes of smoke are isolated and straight; over the long river, the setting sun looks round.’ The vast, boundless and desolate desert at the border is filled with bleakness from history. The votive Buddhas enshrined in the grottoes of Dunhuang, as well as the incalculable statues of deities, painted murals and scriptures form a rich source of inspiration for artists. Law Wing-fai and Wong Chi-ching will share their profound feelings in the lecture.

Law Wing-fai is one of the few seasoned composers who crosses over the boundaries of artistic and commercial aspects in Hong Kong. He is also the founder of Wuji Ensemble. He was the composer-in-residence of The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts and is currently the Artistic Director of Wuji Ensemble.  Wong Chi-ching is the former pipa principal of the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra and the founder of Wuji Ensemble and Wuxin Ensemble. She is currently the music director of Wuji Ensemble. The moderator Cheung Pui-shan is the first Hong Kong composer appointed by the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing as a full-time professor in music.
