Trailer
Dumb Type, Japan's legendary multimedia collective formed in 1984, comprised of people working in the visual arts, dance, video, computer programming, music and other diverse fields, including Shiro Takatani, Takayuki Fujimoto and Ryoji Ikeda. They have maintained an open-ended creative style with no fixed director and a changing roster of members participating in each new production as part of their on-going exploration of ever new possibilities in artistic collaboration. Their interdisciplinary efforts continue to transcend existing genres of fine art, theatre and dance. Regardless of genre, the essence of their work addresses socio-political apathy, and today’s technological reality on a global scale. Representative stage performances include pH, S/N, memorandum and Voyage, etc.
In parallel with performances, they also create installation works and exhibits. In 2018 their exhibition Dumb Type: Actions + Reflexions was held at Centre Pompidou-Metz, France. An updated version of the same exhibition was held at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo from 2019 to 2020. Dumb Type was elected as an exhibitor at the Japanese pavilion in the 59th Venice Biennale International Art Exhibition, which is to be held in 2022.
