The Philharmonics, ‘the limitless ensemble’, brings together four members of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, with a musician from the Berliner Philharmoniker, a versatile pianist and an improvisatory-fascinated violinist for a deliciously heady cocktail of virtuosity, passion, and good old fun.  The musicians’ diverse ethnic and musical background guide their choice of repertoire ranging from classical music to Hungarian folk music, jazz, and Latin music, and give audience exciting performances of wide-ranging music.

The secret ingredient to the ensemble’s runaway success is its members’ independent artistic pursuits that include composing and transcribing new repertoire.  Native Slovak Tibor Kovác, the founder and the mastermind of The Philharmonics, is a striking, salient principal violinist of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and a fascinating reflection of the Austro-Hungarian multiculturalism.  Viola player Thilo Fechner is German and an active chamber musician.  Cellist Stephan Koncz, representing the venerable Berliner Philharmoniker, and clarinet virtuoso Daniel Ottensamer come from old Viennese musical families with Hungarian ingredients.  Budapest-born Ödön Rácz hails from a dynasty of renowned bass soloists and serves as principal bass in the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra.  Austrian violinist Sebastian Gürtler’s curiosity for challenging the constraints of styles through improvisation has grown from his position as concertmaster of Vienna Volksoper, and one of the most promising young Austrian pianist Christoph Traxler adds a certain edge to The Philharmonics’s unique style with his technically effortless, superb touch and sensitive accompanying.
