Running time of each performance is about 1 hours 30 minutes including an intermission of 15 minutes.

 

Audience is strongly advised to arrive punctually.  Latecomers will only be admitted during the intermission or at a suitable break.

 

The presenter reserves the right to change the programme and substitute artists.

Pan Asia Symphony Orchestra

Pan Asia Symphony Orchestra is a highly organised orchestra aiming at promoting music among the general public especially the young generation in Hong Kong.  In order to achieve its goal, the Orchestra has performed frequently in the Hong Kong City Hall, regional town halls and civic centres a few hundred times for 40 years.  A number of internationally famous conductors and soloists have been invited to perform with it.  By using the idioms of popular music and organising concert talks, the Orchestra has successfully introduced serious music and Chinese orchestral music to the public, and at the same time, brought about an awareness of the indigenous culture of the people.

 

 

Dr. Yip Wai-hong

Music Director

Dr. Yip Wai-hong is an eminent music educator.  He served the Hong Kong Baptist University as the Head of Music and Fine Arts Department for almost 30 years.  He founded the Pan Asia Symphony Orchestra, Hong Kong Children's Choir, Yip's Children's Choir and Hong Kong Children's Symphony Orchestra with the aim to nourish young talents in Hong Kong.  He also established the Hong Kong Professional Winds in 2013.

 

The honours and accolades bestowed upon Dr. Yip include Honorary Citizenships of Fort Worth, Dallas and Tucson; The Golden Key of Avon Lake, Florida; Colonel of the State of Kentucky, the United States; and Hong Kong Art Educator of the Year in 1990.  In 2003, he was awarded the Medal of Honour of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.  In 2006, he was conferred the Award of Honorary University Fellow of the Hong Kong Baptist University.  Dr. Yip was made the Fellows of Wells Cathedral School, the United Kingdom in 2008.  He was awarded Montblanc de la Culture Arts Patronage Award in 2013.

 

In 2011, Dr. Yip was awarded the Bronze Bauhinia Star (BBS) for his valuable contribution to children music education, as well as his dedication in promoting the development of choral and orchestral music.

 

 

Johnny Ng

Guest Conductor/ Narrator

Recipient of a Conducting Fellowship with the American Academy of Conducting at Aspen (AACA) in 2013, Johnny Ng made his debut with the AACA Orchestra in July the same year.  He has been the Resident Conductor for the Hong Kong Children’s Symphony Orchestra, currently serving as the Guest Conductor for the Hong Kong Polytechnic University Orchestra and Pan Asia Symphony Orchestra.

 

A graduate from the Eastman School of Music in New York, Ng studied viola performance under the tutelage of George Taylor and received his Master of Music degree in 2012.  Ng also holds a Performer's Certificate from the John J. Cali School of Music, where he studied with violist Li Honggang from the Shanghai Quartet.  In March 2013, he made his appearance with the Shanghai Quartet at the Carnegie Hall in New York.

 

As a versatile musician, Ng is also an avid conductor and his teachers include Robert Spano, Ken Lam and Mark Scatterday.  In March 2012, he was invited to participate in the Conductors Guild's Conductor Training Workshop at the Cleveland Institute of Music to study with Carl Topilow and Theodore Kuchar.  He has served as the Assistant Conductor for the Pasadena Young Musicians' Orchestra and the Music Director for the San Gabriel Valley Alliance Church in California.  He also served as the Assistant Conductor to Ken Lam in Montclair, New Jersey in 2012-2013.

 

Chan Ka-hei

Clarinet

Chan Ka-hei is a sixteen-year-old Form Six student of St. Paul’s College.  Chan began learning clarinet at the age of seven, under the guidance of Fanny Lau.  Chan attended master classes of Andrew Simon, Principal Clarinet of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra and esteemed clarinet soloist Pierre Pichler.  Chan achieved Fellowship Diploma (FTCL) in Trinity College London when he was fifteen.

 

Chan has been a member of the Hong Kong Children's Symphony Orchestra led by Dr. Yip Wai-hong since 2009.  He has performed in Austria, Germany, Australia, New Zealand, the United States, Canada and the Mainland with the summer tours of the Orchestra since 2011.  Chan was the Principal Clarinet of the Orchestra during 2013-2015.  Chan performed as a soloist in Weber’s Concertino for Clarinet and Mozart’s first movement of Clarinet Concerto in A in 2014 and 2016 respectively.

 

Chan has been the Principal Clarinet of St. Paul’s College Orchestra and Woodwind Ensemble since 2013.  As a member of the school’s music team, Chan has participated in numerous Hong Kong Schools Music Festivals and the school’s orchestra was the champion in 2015.  Chan was also the recipient of the Scholarship for Instrumentalist 2015-2016 at St. Paul’s College.

 

Janice Leung

Viola

Janice Leung is eleven years old now. She began learning viola at the age of six.  Leung is passionate about music and has studied under the guidance of Johnny Ng of Yip’s Children’s Choral and Performing Arts Centre.  With the meticulous training from Ng, Leung achieved Grade 8 of the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) with distinction in 2015 and was awarded in the 68th Hong Kong Schools Music Festival with honours in 2016.

 

Leung has been the Principal Viola of her school’s orchestra, she is currently a violist of the Hong Kong Children's Symphony Orchestra.  In 2015, Leung toured with the Orchestra and performed four concerts in Austria.  During the tour, she was also the cultural ambassador of Hong Kong who participated in cultural exchange activities with the Vienna Boys’ Choir.  In 2016, as a Hong Kong representative of the Orchestra, Leung performed and participated in cultural exchange activities in five provinces and cities in the Mainland. 

 

Wong Pui-ying

Violin

Born in Hong Kong, Wong Pui-ying is eleven years old now.  She began learning violin at three and a half years old, under the guidance of Wong Chiu-tan, the Music Director of the Hong Kong Kowloon East Orchestra.  She has been studying with Lo Kwok-yan since 2014.  Wong was the recipients of numerous awards, including second place in the 2nd “Ai Wo Zhonghua” Youth Talent Contest in Hong Kong in 2010, gold prize in violin solo in the western music category of 1st “Wuzhou Cup” instrumental competition in Beijing in 2011, third place in violin (Grade 7) in the 64th Hong Kong Schools Music Festival in 2012.  Wong was the champion in violin (Grade 8) in the 67th Hong Kong Schools Music Festival, first prize winner in children violin section and the champion in the Final Contest of the 2nd Hong Kong International Music Festival in 2015.  Wong performed The Butterfly Lovers violin concerto under the baton of Hong Kong renowned conductor Henry Shek in 2013.  Wong achieved Performance Diploma from Trinity College London (LTCL) in 2014.
