The Austrian composer Franz Schubert (1797–1828) has always been dearly loved.  For a long time he was celebrated chiefly for his short pieces such as art songs.  Later he gradually became widely recognised for his important contributions to large-scale composition.  A number of genres in his output are still rarely explored today, however, and even familiar works often remain underappreciated for their subtleties and innovations.  Marking the 225th anniversary of Schubert’s birth, the four lectures in the present series elucidate what makes his music singularly captivating, through close listening to a selection of works, from the most joyous and carefree to the most tormented and disturbing.
(Conducted in Cantonese)

1st Lecture (2/11)# Schubert and his Early Solo Songs
Introduction to the composer — a teenage “Father of the Lied (German art song)”?

2nd Lecture (9/11)# Schubert’s Mature Solo Songs
Works that include the song cycles Die schöne Müllerin and Winterreise — how do the two compare?

3rd Lecture (23/11) Schubert’s Instrumental Music
Piano, chamber and orchestral works — to which genre did Schubert make an unrivalled contribution?

4th Lecture (7/12) Schubert Rarities
Choral, dramatic and sacred works — does any work of Schubert’s fit all three categories?
