A recent third place winner of the 34th Annual Jessie Kneisel Lieder Competition in 2015, Candice Chung began her vocal training in 2005 with soprano Margaret Yim. Chung earned her Bachelor of Music degree at Manhattan School of Music in 2011 where she studied with Metropolitan Opera’s Mark Oswald and renowned American soprano Ashley Putnam. At Eastman School of Music where she attained her Master of Music degree in 2015, she studied with American mezzo-soprano Katherine Ciesinski.
In 2015, she won the Encouragement Award at the Metropolitan Opera National Council District Auditions. Her most recent stage appearances include the role of The Dew Fairy in Hansel and Gretel, and Rosalinde in Die Fledermaus in Connecticut, the United States. With Eastman Opera Theatre she sang the role of Laetitia in The Old Maid and the Thief, and covered the role of Emily in Ned Rorem’s Our Town. Other stage appearances include the role of Leoena from La Belle Helene, the title role of Manon, Marschallin from Der Rosenkavalier, Susanna from Le Nozze di Figaro and Norina from Don Pasquale.
As a concert soloist, Chung sang Dvorak’s Te Deum and Beethoven’s Mass in C with the Eastman School of Music, Bach’s Magnificat in D with the Hong Kong Young People’s Chorus, Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana with the Hong Kong Ponte Singers and Orchestra. Chung was also a frequent soloist for the Eastman Cantata Series during her studies at Eastman.
In 2014, Chung was a national semi-finalist at the Classical Singer Vocal Competition and was awarded first place in the National Association of Teachers of Singing Regional Competition in the United States.
Timmy Tsang (Piano)
Timmy Tsang studied piano performance and accompaniment with Gabriel Kwok at The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (HKAPA) and graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree (Piano Performance) with First Class Honours and a Professional Diploma (Opera Repetiteur/Accompanist) with distinction. He has been the repetiteur for various operas such as Don Pasquale, Una Cosa Rara, Die Zauberflöte, La Bohème, Aïda, Die Fledermaus, Gianni Schicchi, Suor Angelica and L’Elisir d’Amore. He has conducted workshops on piano accompaniment for the Alliance Bible Seminary, the Baptist Theological Seminary and the HKAPA Excel Summer Piano Festival, and worked with the Academy’s visiting conductors and musicians, including Sir Neville Marriner, Lazlo Heltay, Georg Tintner, John Mattheson, Constantine Kitsopolous, Thomas Woods, Enza Ferrari, Malcolm Bilson and Geoffrey Pratley. Tsang is also active as a collaborative pianist with singers. He has made numerous concert appearances and radio recordings with distinguished singers in Hong Kong. Recent performance highlight includes the radio recording with tenor Stephen Ng performing Benjamin Britten’s Winter Words, Janáček’s Diary of a Vanished One and Schubert's Winterreise with the tenor, David Quah. Tsang is now a full-time lecturer (Vocal and Academic Studies) at HKAPA, teaching aural training. He is also a voice coach at the Academy.
