2017 is a year of jubilation. Celebrating the 20th Anniversary of Hong Kong’s return to China, the Hong Kong City Chinese Orchestra and the National Class One Conductor Hu Bingxu stage a concert of dazzling Chinese instrumental pieces. Guest artists perform works featuring the unique sound and the richness of Chinese culture.
The concert begins with Hong Kong composer Alfred Wong’s Nocturne to the Victoria Harbour, depicting the gentle breeze and the charming scene of Hong Kong’s Victoria Harbour. Another Hong Kong composer’s work on stage is Lo Leung-fai's Spring. The music is a paean to spring and a sanguine vision of hope for the future. Moreover, the orchestra provides evidence of the descriptive capability of a Chinese orchestra by performing Kuan Nai-chung’s Yalu Zangbo River, taken from the second movement of Journey to Lhasa.
Taken materials from a traditional kunqu tune, In the Deep of the Night, evoking tones of Peking operatic flavour, is performed by the National Class One Performer erhu soloist Li Fuhua, with his jinghu, the highest pitched stringed instrument in orchestra and the main instrument in the Peking Opera. In stark contrast, Li also takes the centrestage to play Chen Yaoxing’s widely acknowledged erhu composition, The Shanbei Cantabile. Re-visiting the ruins, the Chinese Red Army veterans express nostalgia on the highly charged experience of combats.
Moreover, who could resist the thrilling pipa concerto Hua Mulan, composed by one of the most esteemed Chinese composers, Gu Guanren? Hong Kong young pipa performer Yu Wing-ka presents this timeless masterpiece, featuring enchanting melodies, stormy episodes and glorious moments.
Composed by Liu Wenjin in 1982 and won a Class One Award at the Third National Music Compositions Accreditation Awards, The Great Wall Capriccio is one of the evening's highlights. Erhu soloist Ching Sau-wing (the Artistic Director of the Hong Kong City Chinese Orchestra) and the orchestra join forces to present this monumental erhu concerto. Filled with composer’s love and affection, the piece commemorates the long history of China and conveys the confidence in a bright future.
For certain, it makes the event a must-see spectacle.
