“Teriver Cheung reveals a gentle touch and a mature, composerly approach on his first recording as a leader… (He) demonstrates an impressive command of his instrument” – JazzTimes
The idea of Departure first came up in 2015 when I composed a piece named “Morning before Departure”, titled as ”0200“ of Hong Kong Episodes premiered in the 10th Anniversary of World Cultures Festival. The piece describes the dreamy feeling before sunrise at the airport, waiting alone for a departing flight.
I have been looking back on my journey as a musician for the past 10 years and more: leaving Hong Kong to pursue Jazz education in Texas; moving to New York to experience the highest level of artistry possible; performing all over the world, as well as curating and composing for new exciting projects back in Hong Kong. Leaving my comfort zone has always allowed me to find fresh inspiration and to expand my palette of expression. The word “Departure” holds a lot of meaning for me and is a rich source of inspiration for this new project.
Since the reworking of Hong Kong Episodes and its subsequent international tour, I began to develop new ideas revolving around the chamber ensemble concept. I invited Singaporean pianist and hammond organist Chok Kerong to collaborate on this new project. We decided to explore the jazz / classical blend further: a jazz organ trio along with a four-piece brass / woodwind section and a string quartet, making up a unique 11 piece chamber jazz ensemble.
Kerong and I have been regularly working together for the past few years. Most notably, in 2015, I participated in his chamber jazz project, ELEVEN, which was produced and presented by Singapore’s national arts centre, the Esplanade. His compositions displayed maturity, advanced rhythmic ideas and a deep understanding of many styles of music. In a way, his personal vision seemed to be developing in parallel with mine, as it was during this period that my own chamber jazz project Hong Kong Episodes was being developed. He was also the pianist for the Hong Kong Episodes international tour in 2017. It seems fitting that our individual explorations over the past few years are now converging in Departure — the compositions represent our musical journey thus far and the common space shared between our musical imagination.
