To commemorate the 10th anniversary of Madam Tsar Teh-yun’s death, the Deyin Qin Society will present a variety of events under the title “Heart of Guqin Heritage: Guqin Concerts and Demonstration Talk Series”.
Madam Tsar Teh-yun was born in Huzhou of Zhejiang and came to Hong Kong in the 1930s. She devoted much of her time to playing the guqin, and her instrument always accompanied her during the hard times when she travelled around. When guqin playing was suppressed in Mainland China during the 1960s and 70s, Madam Tsar continued to practice the guqin in Hong Kong, thus making an important contribution to the preservation of this traditional skill. As well as being a master guqin player, she began to teach students, helping to ensure the future of the art. Her students formed the Deyin Qin Society in 1998 with the aim of promoting the practice of the guqin and the spirit and art of Madam Tsar.
The upcoming series of activities in respectful memory of Madam Tsar includes a concert to be performed by selected members of the Society and six solo concerts led by Lau Chor-wah, Tse Chun-yan and Sou Si-tai together with second generation followers and friends. The pieces to be played have mostly been handed down from Madam Tsar, but there will also be new compositions and rearrangements. The talks will be given by the first and second generation followers Tse Chun-yan, Wong Shu-chee and Chuen-fung Wong, and Professor Yu Siu-wah. Themes of the talks include an introduction to Madam Tsar and explorations of different aspects of guqin.
