A Century of Cantonese Music

Cantonese Opera, Cantonese operatic song and instrumental music using Guangdong musical instruments can be considered Cantonese music or Guangdong music in a broad sense. This family of music is not only closely related to the Hongkongers, it also forms a bond with all Chinese communities. The Yueyue Mingqu Ji (Famous Works in Cantonese Music)(1933-55) suggested the known Cantonese music had been blooming from the last century in the Guangdong province, Hong Kong, Macao, Shanghai, Foshan and Taishan. It had even spread to non-Cantonese-speaking cities like Tianjin, Tangshan, Lanzhou, Taiyuan and Jinan, and had also blossomed in overseas Chinese communities. It is almost a century since the genesis of Cantonese music. The programme of ‘A Century of Cantonese Music’ consisting two concerts and guided lectures, shall bring audience to review our precious traditions.

The ‘Cantonese Music Gala Guangdong, Hong Kong and Shanghai’ Concert will be led by the virtuosi of Cantonese Music including pipa virtuoso Li Canxiang from Guangzhou, former President cum Artistic Director of the Guangdong National Orchestra; huqin master Li Zhaofang from Shanghai, National Class One Musician and former Concertmaster of Shanghai Chinese Orchestra; and huqin virtuoso Yu Qiwei, National Class One Musician and Head of Chinese Music of The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. They will bring the representative works of Cantonese music for an exceptional enchanting night.

National Class One Performer Chen Lingyu is a great singer self-accompanied by pipa and an awardee of both the Peony Award of Chinese Song Art and the China Gold Record Award.  She will join renowned gaohu and guzheng player Pan Qianqian, a Cantonese operatic songs singer and winner of both the Peony Award of Chinese Song Art and the Guangdong Province Song Art Competition Gold Prize to perform classics of Cantonese music in the ‘Celebrating a Century of Cantonese Music and Songs’ Concert.

Apart playing alongside the above masters, the Cantonese Music and Song Art Troupe will also perform with its Artistic Advisor and National Class One Musician He Kening; Head of its Arts Office cum President of Cantonese Music and Song Art Troupe No.1 and bearer of Guangdong Music (an intangible cultural heritage of Guangzhou) Chen Fangyi; and yangqing and xylophone player Huang Liping, winner of both the Guangdong Province Ethnic Instruments Competition Class One Award and the Guangdong Province Song Art Competition Gold Prize.  All together they will bring audience a series of famous Cantonese tunes including Spring Comes to the Fields, Fish Frolic in the Water in Spring, The Flowing Water and the Drifting Clouds and Billowing Waves and sprit music written for non-traditional instruments such as slide guitar and saxophone.

There will be also three guided lectures including two lectures given by Professor Yu Siu-wah and Victor Cheng to share the history and culture of Cantonese music with audience.
