A Century of Cantonese Music
Cantonese Opera, Cantonese operatic song and instrumental music using Guangdong musical instruments can be considered Cantonese music or Guangdong music in a broad sense. This family of music is not only closely related to the Hongkongers, it also forms a bond with all Chinese communities. The Yueyue Mingqu Ji (Famous Works in Cantonese Music)(1933-55) suggested the known Cantonese music had been blooming from the last century in the Guangdong province, Hong Kong, Macao, Shanghai, Foshan and Taishan. It had even spread to non-Cantonese-speaking cities like Tianjin, Tangshan, Lanzhou, Taiyuan and Jinan, and had also blossomed in overseas Chinese communities. It is almost a century since the genesis of Cantonese music. The programme of ‘A Century of Cantonese Music’ consisting two concerts and guided lectures, shall bring audience to review our precious traditions.
