Guangdong Music Series: 'Quintessence of Hakka, Chaozhou and Cantonese Music' Concert

IntroductionProgrammeAbout the PerformersTicketing

Han (Hakka), Chaozhou and Cantonese music may seem like distant ideas on account of their characteristics, but they are actually bonded and influence each other.  The Hakka music has integrated the ancient Zhongyuan tunes and the Guangdong folk music.  It is marked by its serenity and elegance while being straightforward and frank at times.  The Chaozhou guzheng was based on the music played by the literati from around Chaozhou and the folk tunes.  It was and is still popular around Chaozhou and Shantou, the Chaozhou-speaking regions.  It is an integral part of Chaozhou silk-string music.  The Cantonese guzheng is a relatively new edifice.  It is mostly transcribed from other Cantonese music onto the guzheng by the Lingnan experts.

Professor Rao Ningxin, the leading virtuoso and educator of guzheng, will bring us authentic Hakka music for the night.  Rao Shuhang, son of Professor Rao, will perform Cantonese music= on the guzheng, with Chen Junhui on the Chaozhou guzheng.  It is going to be the best place for guzheng lovers.  The concerts have also invited three renowned musicians including Tam Po-shek, a dongxiao virtuoso, who is recently active in pops music and multi-media performances.  He is also versed in the Lingnan calligraphy and painting.  His mastery in Guangdong culture and aesthetics would surely unveil in his music.  Lei Yeying, on the gaohu, is the first one who obtained a master’s degree in Gaohu Performance and Teaching in the mainland. She is now teaching in the Xinghai Conservatory of Music.  The National Class One Composer, Wang Peiyu, is also an expert of Chaozhou and Shantou music who studyied a wide range of Chinese instruments at young age, particularly Chaozhou guzheng.  He has also contributed much to the Chaozhou and Shantou repertoires.

Audience can enjoy the flavourful Guangdong music with the Hakka, Chaozhou and Cantonese scents in these two concerts of different programmes.
