The two concerts will start with solo piece by Yang Xiaoyu, the renowned young Chinese violinist and concertmaster of the China National Centre for the Performing Arts Orchestra. The Red Violin Caprices for the first concert is composed by John Corigliano. Based on the original music from the film The Red Violin, the composer arranged a violin solo in 1999 with Baroque, Gypsy and arch-Romantic idioms. For the second concert, Yang will play Grand Caprice on Der Erlkönig (after Franz Schubert’s Der Erlkönig) which is arranged by Heinrich Ernst as the concert overture.
As a highly versatile and talented solo, orchestra and ensemble performer, Yang will join hands with the principal violist of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, as well as the Hong Kong-born guest conductor of Pan Asia Symphony Orchestra Andrew Ling to perform Sibelius’s Violin Concerto in D minor. Sibelius was born in Finland. Most of his compositions were inspired by the elements from his homeland including history, legends and folk music, which made him become one of the most important Finnish nationalism composers. His violin concerto is being claimed as one of the most challenging concertos, which is not only about the demanding technique for a violinist, but also requires the violinst to demonstrate the compositional characteristic and style of Finnish nationalism music.
Year 2018 marks the 125th anniversary of Tchaikovsky's demise. Ling will conduct Pan Asia Symphony Orchestra to perform Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No.5. The four movements from this symphony reflect the composer’s depression in 1888, his victory over fate as well as his pursuit of life and love.
