Angus Lee
Named one of the "Young Music Makers 2012" by the Radio Television Hong Kong Radio 4, Angus Lee is a versatile performer-composer, having served as flautist of the Hong Kong New Music Ensemble (HKNME) since 2016. He has also worked as a freelance musician with the Hong Kong Sinfonietta since 2011, and is a founding member of the local chamber music collective, NOVA Ensemble.
Supported by the Aedas Scholarship and The Hong Kong Jockey Club Music and Dance Fund, Lee graduated from The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (HKAPA) and Royal Academy of Music in the UK with the highest honours. His principal teachers include Tim Wilson, Olivier Nowak, Samuel Coles and Kate Hill. Acknowledged for his dynamic interpretations of contemporary works and insightful rethinking of the standard repertoire, Lee was a winner of HKAPA’s Academy Concerto Trial from 2011 to 2014, having performed concerti by Jolivet, Mozart and C.P.E. Bach with the Academy Symphony Orchestra. He has also taken part in international summer institutions to further his training, including the Asian Youth Orchestra, HKNME Modern Academy in Hong Kong, London Sinfonietta Academy in the UK, and the renowned Lucerne Festival Academy in Switzerland, where he was named soloist for founder Pierre Boulez's memorial concert in 2016.
Lee has always considered composition as a natural extension of his activities as a performer. Despite being largely self-taught, Lee has emerged as one of the most active composers of his generation. His works have been commissioned and performed by, among others, the Hong Kong New Music Ensemble, Hong Kong Sinfonietta, MIT Saxophone Ensemble in Taiwan, Kollektiv International Totem in Switzerland, Ensemble Suono Giallo in Italy and Trio Accanto in Germany, as well as the CYCLE Music and Art Festival in Iceland, Ciclo de Música Contemporánea de Oviedo in Spain and Asian Music Festival in Japan. He has studied with composers Toshio Hosokawa, Mark Andre, Philippe Manoury and Dimitri Papageorgiou at the Impuls Academy in Austria, HKNME Modern Academy, ilSuono Academy for Young Composers in Italy, Delian Academy for New Music in Greece and most recently, the Académie Musica in France.
