Each performance will run for about 2 hours including a 15 minute intermission.
Audience is strongly advised to arrive punctually. Latecomers will only be admitted during the intermission or at a suitable break.
The presenter reserves the right to change the programme and substitute artists.
Chan Kai-him is a young huqin artist born and raised in Hong Kong. He held a Bachelor of Music (Honours) degree with first class honours from The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (HKAPA) in 2016, with a double major of erhu and gaohu under the tutelage of Wong On-yuen and Yu Qiwei. He also benefited from the coaching of many virtuosi such as Xiao Baiyong, Liu Yang, Jiang Cairu and Xue Ke. In 2018, he further obtained a Master of Music degree with distinction from the HKAPA, major in gaohu under the tutelage of Yu Qiwei. During his studies, he was the recipient of several scholarships for his outstanding performance, including the HSBC HKAPA Mainland China Study Programme scholarship (2013-15), the SAPA Scholarships (2014-15), Dr George and Maisie Choa Charitable Foundation Scholarship (2014), Spring-Time Stage Productions Scholarship (2015), and Cecil Leong Scholarship (2016).
Chan is an active figure on the concert stage, performing as soloist and lead player for countless times, and has held huqin solo recitals. In 2013, he won the HKAPA Concerto Competition and performed Ballade of Lan Huahua in the prize-winners’ concert. In 2014, he was the lead erhu in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, the theme of the titled concert jointly organised by the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and the Hong Kong Youth Symphonic Band. In December of the same year, he played the erhu solo in Fate at the “Academy Chinese Orchestra Concert: Works by Liu Xijin” orgainsed by the HKAPA. In 2015, he played erhu and zhutiqin solo in The Phoenix Terrace on Mount Yinhua at the concert “Poetic Autumn: A Showcase of Cantonese Music by Li Zhuxin”. In 2016, he was invited to be the erhu soloist in the erhu concerto, Capriccio on The Theme of Princess Changping, at the concert “Voices of Cantonese Narrative Music – Yuen Siu-fai and Windpipe Chinese Music Ensemble”, which was part of the programme of Hong Kong Week 2016@Taipei.
In 2015, Chan was selected as one of the “Young Music Makers” by Radio Television Hong Kong. In the same year, he won a silver prize at the International Youth Erhu Competition (Hong Kong) – Young Professionals Group B. Currently, he is the acting co-concertmaster of the Windpipe Chinese Music Ensemble, a part-time erhu performer at the Music Office, a member of the Hong Kong Music Lover Chinese Orchestra, and a co-founder of the Hong Kong huqin ensemble, Goin Music. He has also represented the HKAPA and several music institutions to go on tour for artistic exchanges and performances in Belgium, the Netherlands, Austria, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Luxembourg, Hungary, Ireland, Taiwan and the Mainland, etc.
