The Pan Asia Symphony Orchestra will be joined by Fan Tao, National Class One Conductor, and Andrew Ling, Principal Violist of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra in two exciting concerts for the music aficionados of Hong Kong, entitled Heroic.
The opening number of the first evening is the overture to Così fan tutte which, together with Le nozze di Figaro and Don Giovanni, form the famous trio of opera buffa by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The libretti of all three were written by Lorenzo da Ponte, in whom Mozart found a partner in his opera works. The story of Così fan tutte goes like this: two officers express their confidence in their fiancées that the ladies will remain faithful whatever happens. But their friend is skeptical about this, and claims that all women are fickle. He lays a wager with them, and stages a scheme by which they will exchange places and seduce the other’s lover by disguise. The title Così fan tutte comes from the aria sung at the end of Act Two, as an affirmation of the propounded belief that women change their minds so easily that their promises are not to be trusted. Beethoven found the play immoral, and wrote as a rebuttal Fidelio, an opera about a woman who saves her husband with courage, thus upholding true love as a virtue.
Another item on the programme is Beethoven’s Symphony No. 8, a short but finely crafted piece. Though it was composed at a time when the composer was going through several unpleasant incidents in his life, it betrays no trace of them, but maintains a cheerful, light-hearted mood throughout. The terse structure and the ingenious instrumentation are good illustrations of Beethoven’s deserving esteem in classical music.
Dr Yip Wai-hong, Music Director of the Pan Asia Symphony Orchestra, is an eminent music educator with a long history of dedicating himself to grooming young artists. He is therefore an important figure in the development of music in Hong Kong. As a composer, he has also many distinguished works. The second half of the concert will feature his violin concerto, Heroic, with Andrew Ling as a soloist. The music is in three movements: the first, Hero, is in a traditional sonata form. The unusual rhythm and the tuneful melody elucidate the emotional world and stoicism of a heroic figure. The second, The Boundless Desert, is a slow, lyrical movement imbued with the musical elements of Inner Mongolia. The third, Triumph, which has only been completed recently, sums up the story and life experience of a national hero on his triumphant return from an expedition.
