If you love jazz, you will be no stranger to names like Miles Davis, John Coltrane and Bill Evans. Their styles may have differed, but these jazz legends were some of the most brilliant figures of their time. In a series of six lectures, Alan Kwan will take you on a journey into the world of different jazz musicians to learn about their history and stories, listen to their classic hits, and get a deeper look into the characteristics of their styles, performing techniques as well as influences on contemporary jazz. There will also be a live jam session with Alan and his band, so remember to get your instrument ready – it's jam time!
13 Nov 2018 (Tue) Miles Davis (1926 – 1991)
Miles Davis was one of the most influential jazz trumpeters in the history of jazz. He was a pioneer of jazz music throughout his career of over five decades, leading the way in establishing different jazz styles. Under his guidance, many young musicians went on to become jazz legends themselves.

John Coltrane made a name for himself playing the saxophone. He dabbled in the most popular jazz styles that spread over different eras, but he could always turn them into his own. He was therefore able to create new genres and performing techniques and has left a legacy that continues to impact jazz to this very day.

Bill Evans was renowned for his performances with his piano trio and as a soloist. His renditions of jazz standards and his own original compositions are a must-listen for beginning jazz musicians.

With over a hundred hits on the pop charts, Nat King Cole was a famed jazz pianist and vocalist who brought jazz into the mainstream. The King Cole Trio albums are a definite must-listen for jazz fans.

Wes Montgomery's distinctive style and sound came from playing the guitar with his thumb. His highly original technique is now a must-learn for jazz guitarists.

20 Dec 2018 (Thu) Wayne Shorter (1933 – )
Jazz saxophonist and songwriter Wayne Shorter was a member of Miles Davis' Second Great Quintet, but later founded his own band, Weather Report. He remains an active figure on the music scene to this day, and is involved in a number of high-profile album projects.

Alan Kwan
Speaker/Demonstration (Guitar)
Alan Kwan studied and developed a career in jazz music in New York, and is currently a jazz guitarist, composer, and educationist. He has performed with a number of well-known jazz musicians including Dayna Stephens, Fabian Almazan, Paul Bollenback and the Grammy Award nominee, Gene Aitken. He has participated in many gala festivals such as the Hong Kong International Jazz Festival, Hong Kong Tap Festival, Denton Jazz Festival, etc., and has performed in many parts of the world including New York and Texas in the US, Tokyo and Taiwan.
Patrick Lui
Demonstrator (Piano)
Pianist, composer and producer, Patrick Lui has appeared in various major international music festivals such as the EUROPAfest, Taichung Jazz Festival, Clockenflap and Jazz Marathon in Hong Kong. His original music compositions have been performed by local and overseas jazz bands. He has collaborated with the local group RubberBand, and local pop artists Terence Siufay and Eason Chan.
Wong Tak-chung
Demonstrator (Double bass)
Wong Tak-chung trained under Tsang Tak-hong, a famous bassist in Hong Kong. When he won the Best Bass Player title in a local music competition for youths, he decided to make music his career and became a full-time musician. He has performed with many famous musicians such as Orlando Bonzi, Dulip Charith, Bob Mocarsky, and Anthony Fernandez. He actively participates in world music festivals, such as the Beishan International Jazz Festival in Zhuhai, China and the Taichung Jazz Festival in Taiwan.
Ted Lo
Demonstrator (Drums)
Ted Lo graduated from the Berklee College of Music in Boston and was a former member of the Ron Carter Quartet. A seasoned and highly respected music-maker in Hong Kong, Lo was dubbed ‘the godfather of jazz in Hong Kong’. The jazz artists he has worked with include Herbie Hancock, Michael Brecker, Larry Coryell, and many others. His versatility in music is reflected in his diverse roles as music-maker, composer and producer. The local pop singers he has collaborated with include George Lam, Eason Chan, Sandy Lam and more.
