( Conducted in Cantonese)
The "St John Passion" and "St Matthew Passion" are two of the best sacred compositions of Bach, telling the Biblical story of Jesus’s crucifixion through singing. These two masterpieces not only showcase Bach’s remarkable compositional technique, but also carry a deep message about the feeling of desperation, fear and selfishness, making the works written in the 18th century still as relevant today.
This lecture series consists of 3 parts, each with live music demonstration to guide the audience through the multilayers of musical meanings in both Passions and offer a new insight to the monumental works.

2nd Lecture: The Story and the Characters
Both passions tell the Biblical story of Jesus’ crucifixion. Instead of simply following the text from the Bible, Bach developed characters by giving the characters singing passage unique to their own. Joins us and find out Bach’s intriguing way of story-telling. Featured characters include Evangelist, Jesus, Peter, Judas and Pilate.

3rd Lecture: Dramatic Choral Scenes
Bach skillfully put soloists, choir and orchestra together in the passions. While the soloists take up the role of different characters, the choir represents the crowd. The dramatic scenes by choir in the two passions will be the highlight of the evening. These includes the impactful “Yelling of Crucifying Jesus” choruses, and the earthquake following Jesus’s death. A chamber orchestra will play along the choir during all demonstrations for a complete display of choir’s emotional intensity in this masterpiece of religious music.
Each appreciation talk will run for about 1 hour and 30 minutes.
