Matthew Lau
Praised by The Aspen Times for his "soulful and technically impressive solo" at his vibraphone concerto debut at the Aspen Music Festival, percussionist Matthew Lau has a rich repertoire that ranges from arrangements of Bach's Violin Sonata on marimba to avant-garde contemporary pieces by Franco Donatoni and Iannis Xenakis. He is also committed to communicating the meaning and essence of modern percussion music.
Lau's vision and aesthetic are aimed at expanding the ever-growing percussion repertoire by pushing existing boundaries, incorporating electronics and technologies, and discovering new sounds. His interest in new music has led Lau to commission new pieces with many composers.
A finalist in the vibraphone category at the 2016 Italy Percussive Arts Society Competition, Lau performs around the world. Recent engagements include recitals and masterclasses at various conservatories and universities in Buenos Aires, Melbourne, Perth, Brisbane, Boston, New York, Montclair, Gettysburg, Aspen, Brooklyn, Tokyo, Seoul and Hong Kong,. As an avid chamber musician, he is the co-founder and a member of the percussion duo Fisher/Lau Project along with Abby Fisher.
A native Hong-Konger, Lau obtained his Doctor of Musical Arts in contemporary percussion performance from the Stony Brook University in the United States, under the guidance of Eduardo Leandro. He holds a Master's degree of Music from the New York University, where he studied with Jonathan Haas, Simon Boyar and James Saporito, after obtained a Bachelor's degree of Music from the Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU). Previous teachers also include Lung Heung-wing and James Boznos. Lau is currently a part-time lecturer of the Department of Music at the HKBU.
Lau is a Marimba One, Black Swamp Percussion and Elite Mallets endorsing artist. Besides music, he is a dedicated knitter and a certified Level One Master Knitter from The Knitting Guild Association.
