Bobby Cheng
Bobby Cheng is currently Principal Oboe of the Orchestre national du Capitole de Toulouse, one of the three major ensembles in France. His appointment in 2016 by its musical director, Tugan Sokhiev made him the first foreigner to hold this prominent position in a French orchestra. Cheng appears regularly as guest principal oboe with major orchestras such as the BBC Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre National de France, Orchestre de Paris, and London Symphony Orchestra. As a soloist, he has performed with the Orchestra of the China National Centre for the Performing Arts, Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra, Aspen Philharmonic Orchestra, Korean Chamber Orchestra, as well as Orchestre national du Capitole de Toulouse. He has also given performances throughout Europe, the United States and Asia.
Born and raised in Hong Kong, Cheng started learning oboe under the tutelage of Yiu Song-lam. He graduated with First Class Honours from The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts before he pursued a Master’s degree in Music at the Conservatoire national supérieur musique et danse de Lyon, where he was trained under Jean-Louis Capezzali and Jérôme Guichard, and graduated with the highest honours. During his course of studies, he was awarded full scholarships by Aedas Limited and Hong Kong Jockey Club Music and Dance Fund. He also took the masterclasses of François Leleux, Thomas Indermühle and Maurice Bourgue, and he has attended lessons with Jacques Tys.
Cheng has participated in numerous local and international music competitions. His awards include First Prize at the 5th Giuseppe Ferlendis International Oboe Competition, Italy (2012); First Prize in the Wind Concerto Competition at the Aspen Music Festival and School, the United States (2012); Second Prize at the 41st International Double Reed Society Oboe Competition, the United States (2012); Second Prize at the 9th Beijing Conservatory of Music Winds/Chamber Competition (Oboe Category), China (2011) and First Prize at the 1st International Asian Double Reed Association Oboe Competition, Thailand (2011).
