A Perfect Union of Dance and Physical Theatre
Upon its debut in 2012, Thunderstorm was immediately hailed as a modern classic for its aesthetic beauty, profundity and its daring experimentation. With its rich dramatic effects, complex characters and innovative choreography, the dance-drama expresses the dramatic tension of Cao Yu’s play through dance and its characterisation through body language. At its helm is acclaimed director Tang Shu-wing, three-time winner of the Best Director Award in the Hong Kong Drama Awards. Characteristic of Tang’s inventive directorial style, Thunderstorm is another ground-breaking production since Titus Andronicus 2.0 in its impressive use of dance, mime, costumes and set design.
Thunderstorm is a collaborative work among Tang and award-winning dance choreographers Xing Liang and Mui Cheuk-yin. Together, the creative trio has extracted the essence and spirit of the original play, and conveyed them through dance and minimal narrative technique. Six outstanding dancers form the dramatis personae, portraying the personalities and conflicts of Cao’s original characters through highly imaginative and stylised dance movements. The classic piece of literature is therefore reimagined in a way that is unique, unexpected and completely unforgettable.

Post-performance talk: An Organic Fusion of Dance and Drama
Traditionally, dance is not seen as an art form that lends itself easily to story-telling. Yet what Thunderstorm sets out to do is to reinterpret and express the essence of the original play, including its dramatic tension and memorable characters, through the language of dance and physical theatre. After its debut in 2012, Thunderstorm was met with high praise, as critics found that its daring fusion of dance and drama an innovation which, instead of slavishly following the original narrative, enriches Cao Yu's text through the poetry and symbolism of physical movement.
Choreographer/ co-director Mui Cheuk-yin and Xing Liang will be sharing their creative experience behind Thunderstorm and the talk will be hosted by Ku Ming-shen.
