Suzhou Kunqu Opera Theatre of Jiangsu

The Suzhou Kunqu Opera Theatre of Jiangsu was last in Hong Kong in 2006.  It will return to Hong Kong for a re-run of The Peony Pavilion – The Youth Version, a classic in Chinese opera of our time, featuring the original cast.  Curated by the renowned novelist, Pai Hsien-yung, who will also be the Chief Producer, the production brings together leading names in cultural and artistic circles of China.  Their collaboration marks a synthesis of heritage and innovation and instils the joy and life of youth into the art of Kunqu.  Between its premiere in 2004 and today, The Peony Pavilion – The Youth Version has allowed us to witness the revival and perpetuation of the art form and to feel our resonation with traditional culture.  It is therefore a highly influential and popular piece in contemporary theatre.

The Peony Pavilion – The Youth Version is an ingenious mix of music, singing and dance.  While it retains the poetic finesse of Kunqu, its staging seamlessly blends classical charm with modern appeal, as shown in the portrayal of characters and in the technical aspects.  The music is based upon the vocal styles of the original older version and traditional set tunes, and the original lyrics are fully adopted.  Structurally, the current production is condensed from 55 to 27 episodes, presented in three parts: ‘Love in a Dream’, ‘Love between a Mortal and a Ghost’, and ‘Love in This World’.  The essence of the magnum opus of the great Ming dynasty dramatist, Tang Xianzu (1550–1616), is conveyed through the composite aesthetics of ‘drama, songs, lines, dance and humanity’.

Now seventeen years later, Shen Fengying and Yu Jiulin, both China Theatre Plum Blossom Award winners, are revisiting the Hong Kong stage.  During this time, they have honed and improved their art through more than 300 performances on tour, and have morphed from their juvenile greenness to the consummate artistry of mature actors.  Together, they bring to us again in Hong Kong the touching love story of Du Liniang and Liu Mengmei that transcends death.
