Organised by Hong Kong Xiqu Troupe
The story is based on the legendary story of Ma Xianglan, one of the eight renowned divas of the Qinhuai Region. Ma Xianglan was drawn into depravity at an early age and her talents soon excelled her to become a famous courtesan on the bank of the Qinhuai River. In the opera, Ma Xianglan's life history reveals the integrity and dignity of women through portraying the character as a respectable and charming lady, demonstrating women qualities of a new era. Creation of this opera piece was funded by the National Arts Fund (Young Artistic Talents) and was performed by six generations of actors with three male leads, a special treat to opera lovers.
