The story takes place towards the end of the Ming dynasty. With rising turmoil across the country, Chongzhen flees to Mei Hill. Li Zicheng and his troops catch up with him, slay the emperor and drive back Duoergun of Manchu. Li ascends the throne and makes Chen Yuanyuan his imperial consort. Soon Wu Sangui makes his way to the imperial court. Just when Li gives his order to execute Wu……the situation changes and everyone discovers all the happenings have been a dream. Wu reflects at pains why he has not been able to serve the Ming regime and protect the emperor; Li is ecstatic that his dream is about to come true; while Duoergun asks himself whether he should lead an army to the south as he doubts of its outcome. Is this a dream or reality? If destiny is this dream, and the future be told, is the hero controlled by destiny, or can he change it? Who wins in the end in this turmoil?
