The powerful lyrics of the Cossacks songs, sometimes sparkling with joy, but sometimes heavy with sorrow, the arresting dances, full of fire and gaiety, along with the traditional music, have been combined into unique creative works by the Ensemble.
The running time of each performance is approximately 2 hours including an intermission of 15 minutes. Audience is strongly advised to arrive punctually. Latecomers and audiences who leave their seats during the performance will only be admitted at a suitable break.
Don Cossacks State Academic Song and Dance Ensemble was established in 1936 in Rostov-on-Don, Russia and reconstructed in the 1970s by its late Artistic Director Anatoly Kvasov. Under his direction, the Ensemble went on to win national honours, including the Order of Friendship of Peoples and the State Academic Award in 1986 and 1996 respectively. Since its foundation, the Ensemble had led an explosively creative life. It regularly participates in the largest Russian festivals and in other national celebrations as well as international cultural events. The highly skilled artists of the Ensemble have received by ovations from enchanted audiences in many countries throughout Europe, Asia, the Americas and Africa. Wherever they perform, the Don Cossacks receive a hearty welcome and enjoy excellent press review - critics have described the artists from Rostov-on-Don as "bewitching", "delightful", "spectacular", and "overwhelming".
From the beginning, the repertoire of the Ensemble has been deeply rooted in the vocal traditions of Russia's Don region. The age-old history of the Don Cossacks, who settled along the banks of the serene and stately Don River, is reflected in the spirited musical culture.
