Essences of Edo──Traditional Japanese Puppet Theatre Selections
The Koryu Nishikawa Troupe, the Japanese traditional cart puppetry company will visit Hong Kong for its first time to perform three selected repertoires of "Hachioji Kuruma Ningyo", showcasing the audiences an extraordinary performing skill transmitted since the late of the Edo period.
"Kuruma Ningyo"
"Kuruma Ningyo" is a form of puppet theatre created in late Edo period in Japan. It requires only one puppeteer who seats on a kuruma (cart) and manipulates a ningyo (puppet) for smooth and detailed movements, to present traditional folk repertoire accompanied by live music.

Sanbaso
Based on "Okina" of Noh theatre, Sanbaso is the traditional dance to pray for success on the stage. It is also danced for the wishes of having good harvest and peace.
Tsurionna
A daimyo and his servant visit a Shinto shrine to pray for a good match. What they catch with the fishing rod in the dreams will definitely surprise everyone.
Yajisan and Kitasan (Excerpts)
Yajisan and Kitasan take a trip to Kyoto and walk near a graveyard during sunset, they encounter all kinds of strange and weird things.
In Japanese with Chinese and English surtitles.
The running time is approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes with an intermission of 15 minutes.
There will be a meet-the-artist session after the performance on 16 June.

The puppeteers of The Koryu Nishikawa Troupe, a 150-year-old traditional Japanese puppet theatre troupe, will introduce the history of “Hachioji Kuruma Ningyo”, the structure and manipulation techniques of the puppets in the workshop. Participants can try to manipulate the traditional puppets from Japan.

Located in Hachioji, Tokyo, The Koryu Nishikawa Troupe was established 150 years ago. “Hachioji Kuruma Ningyo” was created by the founder of the troupe and played an important position in the transition of puppet theatre from the late Edo period to the modern era. "Hachioji Kuruma Ningyo" was designated as "Intangible Folk Cultural Property" of Tokyo in 1962 and "Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property" by the Agency for Cultural Affairs, Japan in 2022. The troupe is frequently invited to perform throughout Japan as well as around the world.
