‘DIM’ in the concert title is short for ‘dive into music’, an invitation to the audience to an immersive experience with the various tone colours and musical styles in the pipa music genre.

The performance will run for about 1 hour 30 minutes including a 15-minute intermission.
Audience is strongly advised to arrive punctually. Latecomers will only be admitted during the intermission or at a suitable break.

Belle Shiu is currently a pipa musician with the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra (HKCO). She completed her Master of Music programme at The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts in 2016, under the supervision of Zhang Ying. She started learning pipa under Li Ping of the Music Office at a young age, and later under the tutelage of famous pipa virtuosi Yang Jing and Ren Hong. She also trained in nanyin pipa under Ong Chay-tin, and guzheng under Luo Jing.
Shiu has performed with the renowned Russian violist and conductor Yuri Bashmet, cellist Trey Lee, Moscow Soloists Chamber Orchestra and violist Vladimir Mendelssohn. As a regular guest of Moscow Soloists Chamber Orchestra, she has performed pipa solo in many arts festivals including Sochi Winter Festival in Russia (2019 and 2017), the Verbier Festival in Switzerland (2017), and the Prosecco Festival in Italy (2016), amony others. In 2015, she was the first player of Chinese music invited to perform at the Kuhmo Chamber Music Festival in Finland.
More recently, Shiu curated the HKCO concert, The Neon City, in 2021. She was a pipa solo on that occasion. In 2019, she performed the pipa solo at the HKCO’s tour at the Athens and Epidaurus Festival in Greece. In 2018, she performed the pipa with the local experimental pop band, SoundTube, at the Noise Pop Festival in San Franciscoand pipa solo in Tan Dun’s Concerto for Pipa and Strings with the Philharmonia APA at the concert, The 3rd Altamira Hong Kong International Guitar Symposium Orchestra Showcase.
