Suona : Ma Wai-him*
Ma Wai-him is currently Principal Suona of the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra (HKCO), and a guan virtuoso in China. He has a consummate command of many Chinese musical instruments such as suona, guan, houguan, dizi and xiao, and can adeptly blend the styles of the northern and the southern schools seamlessly in his performances. Ma learned Chinese wind instruments from his father, Ma Wing-shing, at a young age. He holds a Master’s degree in suona and guan from The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. His teachers included Guo Yazhi, Law Hang-leung, Liu Hai, Xia Boyan and Lo Wai-leung. He also furthered his training in suona under Liu Ying and guan under Hu Zhihou in the Mainland.
He was the recipient of the Award for Young Artist (Music) at the Hong Kong Arts Development Awards, winner of the Silver Award – Folk Instruments section at the 16th Osaka International Music Competition in Japan, and Visiting Artist at the School of Music of the HKAPA.
Ma’s recent performances include the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra’s ‘As Stars Go By – The Ethereal Sounds of the Houguan’, ‘In the Mood – Suona and Guan Ensemble Concert’, ‘The Chinese Music Time Machine I’ and ‘The Chinese Music Time Machine II’, on which occasions he also performed as soloist and host to critical acclaim. Ma has performed many crossover concerts with singer-songwriters of pop music, such as Anthony Wong Yiu-ming, Steve Wong Ka-keung, Chow Kwok-yin, Gin Lee, Hong Kong jazz legend Ted Lo and many more. Apart from appearing in crossover concerts at the invitation of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, the Hong Kong International Airport, Ear Up Music, and West Kowloon Cultural District, Ma has been actively engaged in community performances as a social service through music.
Ma has forayed into music composition in recent years, exploring possibilities between tradition and innovation. After the release of his first music video single, La mémoire, in 2020, he has been invited to give online performances of original works and to make theme music videos.
