During her junior years, Ma studied yangqin with Lee Tak-kong and Yu Mei-lai, and further her training in Cantonese yangqin under Pan Weiwen.

She has also performed as a soloist on various occasions and held solo recitals in many parts of the world. Ma has premiered several original works, which include her own compositions: Light in Darkness and The Tanka Boat Song (one of the selected works in The Great Wall Suite which is supported by China National Arts Fund 2023), Hui Cheung-wai’s Moonlit Night, and Joshua Chan's Responses for yangqin and string quintet.
