100th Anniversary of the May Fourth Movement
How the trend of thought set off by the May Fourth Movement inspires the development of contemporary Chinese drama
May Fourth Movement and Modern Chinese Drama
The 1919 May Fourth Movement and the New Culture Movement that follows highlight the resistance of the Chinese people against the humiliation of their national pride and their endeavours in search for a political and cultural future. The trend of thought set off by the May Fourth Movement has tremendous impact on the development of modern Chinese drama which has profound development since then. From the Amateur Drama Movement and the School Drama Movement of the 1920’s, to the leftist thoughts and national crisis of the 1930’s, and playwrights and pioneers of modern Chinese drama like Yao Ke (1905-1991), Tian Han (1898-1968), Xia Yan (1900-1995) and Cao Yu (1910-1996) who have tremendous impact on the development of drama in Hong Kong, they are all influenced by the May Fourth Movement to various extends. 2019 marks the 100th anniversary of the May Fourth Movement, Dr Lo Wai-luk will explore the various facets of the movement with the audiences, how the movement inspired the development of modern Chinese drama, and the relationship between the May Fourth spirit and contemporary culture.

Dr Lo Wai-luk
Dr Lo is the chairman of the Arts Criticism Group of Hong Kong Arts Development Council. He is also a renowned practitioner of dramatic arts, cinema and television and advocate of creative writing. His specialties are scriptwriting, film and theatre aesthetics, and stage productions, and he has both theoretical and practical knowledge in the field. He has worked as a producer for radio and television programmes, and is active as a radio programme host, theatre critic, director and actor.
The running time of each lecture is approximately 2 hours without intermission.
Latecomers will only be admitted at a suitable break.
