A Symposium on the Cantonese Opera Legend, Leung Sing-po (In Cantonese) | Every production in 20th Century Cantonese Opera in Hong Kong could not have been a true success, even if the male and female lead of sheng and dan had their own huge following of fans, without Leung Sing-po on the cast. Endearingly known as ‘Uncle Po’ in and outside the performing arts circles, Leung was a versatile actor capable of commanding both the hualian (painted face) and chou (clown) roles with a unique stage presence. His expressive and amiable face, his voice that carried nuances of humour and wit, and his insightful personification of roles that touched so many hearts, have become an indelible part of the 20th Century social psyche of the Hong Kong people. With Cantonese opera now an Intangible Cultural Heritage as inscribed by UNESCO, it is fitting that we explore the artistic features of ‘Uncle Po’ in the multiple contexts of literature, music, Chinese traditional opera, culture and social clime.
