Prof. Richard Tsang
Prof. Richard Tsang has been active as a promoter of contemporary music and has organized many international exchange events and festivals in this field. Prof. Tsang is the Founding Chairman of the Hong Kong Composers' Guild, Vice-Chairman of the Asian Composers’ League (ACL) and the International Society for Contemporary Music (ISCM) from 1990-1996. He subsequently served as President of the ISCM from 2002-2008, the first non-European to hold this position since the society’s establishment in 1923. As a composer, Prof. Tsang's works have been commissioned by many local and international groups.
Prof. Tsang has also served as guest conductor to many music groups including the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra as well as the Taipei Municipal Chinese Orchestra. He was the founding Music Director of the Hong Kong Sinfonietta from 1990-1993 and has also served as guest conductor for many local choral groups.
Over the years, Prof. Tsang has received many awards, among them the Ten Outstanding Young Persons Award in 1988, the Anglo-Hong Kong Cultural Award, Composer of the Year Award in 1990 and the CASH Golden Sail Award for Best Serious Composition in 2002. He worked with Radio Television Hong Kong in various capacities as producer, channel head and Head of English Programme Services. Academically, Prof. Tsang is currently Professor, Associate Head of the Department of Cultural and Creative Arts (Music) at the Education University of Hong Kong, actively involved in the research and promotion of creative musicking concept and practices to the community. |
