The Music Office Resource Centre, formerly known as the Music Office Library, has been serving to support the teaching and training needs of the Office, and record its history through archiving publications of its music activities since the Office’s establishment in 1977. The Resource Centre is currently housing more than 32,000 items with physical and digital collections ranging from Chinese and Western orchestral, ensemble, solo and choral scores, to music books, music training, audio-visual and reference materials, etc.
“Resounding the Scores: Music Office Chinese Ensemble Music Collection Digitisation Project” was coordinated by the Music Office Expert Advisor, Former Professor of the Department of Music of Hong Kong Baptist University, and Musicologist Professor Helan Yang, and supported by Hong Kong Baptist University's Digital Scholarship Grant. This project features a precious collection of Chinese instrumental ensemble music preserved in the Music Office showcases the music of erhu maestro and former Senior Music Officer of the Chinese Music Section of the Music Office Mr Tong Leung-Tak alongside the compositions and arrangements of a few other musicians that served the Office’s education and performance needs in the past four decades.
On top of archiving, preserving, and sharing this collection for research and performance purposes, this project sets out to promote Chinese music by providing a short biography of Tong, a short description of each piece in this collection, an introduction to Chinese instrumental ensemble music, and a guide to the classification of Chinese instruments. This project also advocates the 'resounding' of this collection by offering three live recordings performed by the Hong Kong Youth Chinese Orchestra (HKYCO). This project's digitisation of the entire run of program notes of HKYCO concerts from 1978 to 2019 further illuminates both the context of this collection and the development of Chinese instrumental music in Hong Kong.
