Based on the true story of the “Case of the 3 Wolves” in the 1960s, Kidnap recounts the tension between a gas-station worker Lung (Lo Lieh) and the heir of a rich family Wong (Lau Dan). Angered by the insults regularly inflicted on him, Lung persuades his friends Chiu (Fan Meisheng) and Ngau (Tung Lin) to kidnap Wong. After Wong is killed accidentally when he tries to escape, the three decide to kidnap Wong’s father (Ching Miao). This, however, ends up in causing a series of conflicts among themselves which ultimately leads to their arrest and journey to the gallows. As usual, Cheng Kang was meticulous on the details of the story, and opted for a style of realism in recreating the inner world of the three protagonists, especially in terms of their remorse and sorrow before they witness their lives coming to an end. Taking two years to complete and with a running time of over two and a half hours, Cheng earned his nickname as a “Million Delay Director”.
