Built in 1989, the handmade pipe organ by the Austrian manufacturer Rieger Orgelbau is the most sparkling star in the magnificent Hong Kong Cultural Centre Concert Hall. With 4 manuals, 1 pedalboard, 93 stops and 8 000 pipes, this four-storey tall “King of the Instruments” is one of the largest mechanically operated instruments of its kind in the Southeast Asia. The highly sensitive and responsive touch of the keyboard fully demonstrates the manufacturer’s sophisticated mechanical design and craftsmanship, allowing stronger musical connection between the organist and the instrument in pursuit of artistic excellence. To showcase the full volume and varied timbres of the symphonic pipe organ, supply of wind pressure was largely enhanced and electrical coupler system was also installed in 2010 to provide greater flexibility in switching between lighter and stronger key actions as desired by the player. Handcrafted by time-honoured materials of tin, copper and wood in its construction, the Rieger organ is certainly an exquisite masterpiece with both traditional and modern elements. |
