2023 Hong Kong Youth Symphonic Band Annual Concert ‘Sai Kung‧Sunset Sunrise’

The Hong Kong Youth Symphonic Band will join hands with saxophonist cum Music Office alumnus Virgil Fok to kick start the “Carry on the Music” series, in celebration of the Music Office transcending beyond its 45-year mark, with the concert theme “Sai Kung.Sunset Sunrise”. The Music Office Junior Symphonic Band will also stage their concert debut to showcase music talents of the new generations.

Programme highlights include Around the World which emcompasses music elements from various continents; world premiere of Lo Hau-man’s Dear My Sai Kung, a Hong Kong Composers’ Guild sponsored commission; The Setting Sun Also Rises (in celebration of lives too soon lost) in fond memory of the late Colin Touchin and his contribution to the development of wind music in Hong Kong; and two works of Japanese composers, namely “Seagull”, from Birds, depicting the flux of human lives, and The Knight of the Sky fantasizing a dreamy soar through the air.

Lee Sing-wan

Lee Sing-wan earned a Master degree of Education (Music) and a Master degree of Music in Conducting (Wind Conducting) respectively from the Education University of Hong Kong and the Messiah University of the USA. He joined the Music Office in 2006.

Lee has extensive coaching and performing experience in lower brass instruments and symphonic wind ensembles. Many of his instrumental students received superior ratings at various music festivals and competitions. He has also led outbound tours of music groups to Mainland, Macau, Singapore, Japan, South Korea, Australia, and the United States, and gave critically acclaimed performances in major events such as the “Hong Kong Week of Shanghai Expo”, “Jeju International Wind Ensemble Festival”, “Qingdao International Horticultural Exposition”, “Asia and Pacific Band Directors’ Association Conference” and “World Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles Conference”, to name a few.

Lee is currently Senior Music Officer of the Wind Section of the Music Office, and conductor of Hong Kong Youth Symphony Orchestra, Hong Kong Youth Symphonic Band, and instructor of lower brass instrumental classes in the Music Office.

Kevin Ling

Kevin Ling is one of the most active saxophonists in Hong Kong’s contemporary scene. He graduated from Trinity College of Music in the UK and the Education University of Hong Kong, where he earned a Postgraduate Advanced Diploma in Performance and a Master of Arts in Music Education respectively. Meanwhile, he attained the FTCL in Saxophone from Trinity Guildhall, and received the Music Monetary Award from the Trinity College and the Instrument & Equipment Award from the EMI Music Sound Foundation.

Ling spares no effort in promoting saxophone music in Hong Kong. In earlier years, he founded the Hong Kong Saxophone Ensemble with fellow local saxophonists, and frequently participates in many international saxophone events. He also set up the Holiday Sax, a local saxophone ensemble that provides a platform for young players and students to perform in public. Ling regularly works together with local and overseas composers, and premieres their works at various saxophone events around the world. Apart from coaching and performing, Ling also served as an adjudicator, and was invited by the Instituto Cultural do Governo da R.A.E. de Macau to be one of the adjudicators in the Macao Young Musicians Competition.

Ling is currently Music Officer of the Wind Section of the Music Office, serving as a saxophone instructor, and conductor/ manager of the Hong Kong Youth Symphonic Band and the New Territories Youth Symphonic Band. He is also a freelance player of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra and an instrumental instructor of the Education University of Hong Kong.

Au Wai-see

Au Wai-see started learning bassoon at the Music Office under Lee Chi-wing since young, and later graduated from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, majoring in bassoon performance under the tutelage of Kam Shui, former Principal Bassoon of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra. During her study, Au performed along with the Academy in several joint performances, such as with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra and the University of British Columbia Symphonic Winds, amongst others. Moreover, Au was selected to attend the Canton International Summer Music Academy China (CISMA) to receive symphony orchestral training with Richard Hoenich, the former Principal Bassoon of the Montreal Philharmonic Orchestra, and performed at the Guangzhou Xinghai Music Conservatory.

After graduation, Au dedicated herself to music education, with an aim to promoting music as performing arts, and to cultivating local young musicians. She led students in numerous ensemble groups to give public performances, such as in “Stone Houses Family Garden - Guest Performers of Revitalized Projects”; “Dr Sun Yat-sen Museum Open Day” and “Hong Kong Heritage Museum - Claude Monet: The Spirit of Place” etc., thus as to heighten the performing standards of young musicians through performances, and to bring wind music to the community and promote its culture.

Au is currently Assistant Music Officer of the Wind Section of the Music Office, serving as a bassoon instructor, conductor and manager of the Music Office Junior Symphonic Band, and conductor of the Music Office Junior Symphony Orchestra.

Eric Ng

Eric Ng graduated from The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) with a double degree of Bachelor of Education in Music and Bachelor of Arts in Creative Arts and Culture (Music). Ng studied flute under Ivy Chuang, studied conducting under Victor Tam and Dr Paulina Wong. Currently, he is a visiting student of western orchestral conducting under the guidance of Professor Sharon Choa in the Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts (HKAPA).

During his study in EdUHK, he was selected as the student conductor of the EdUHK Orchestra, the EdUHK Chorus, and the Student Pro-Artist - an elite scheme for students with outstanding music performance ability, where he gained his opportunity to play Reinecke’s Flute Concerto accompanied by the EdUHK Orchestra. He was also an active participant in conducting masterclasses, taught by Jaap Van Zweden, Andrew Mogrelia, Prof Theodora Pavlovitch, Dr TJ Harper, Lio Kuokman, WU Shang-lun and Choi Ho-man, etc.

Ng is currently Assistant Music Officer of the Wind Section of the Music Office, serving as a flute instructor as well as managing the Music Office Junior Symphonic Band and Junior Symphony Orchestra.

Virgil Fok (Saxophone)
Virgil Fok is now studying at The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts for a Bachelor of Music (Honors) Degree, majoring in saxophone performance. His teachers include Kevin Ling, Martin Choy and Charles Ng. During his studies, Virgil achieved the Principal Nomination (Aesthetic Development) and as well as the Dean’s Honour List. Last year, he was appointed as the recipient of the Academy Local Scholarship.

Virgil was the saxophone section leader in the Hong Kong Youth Symphonic Band. He also has collaborated with several ensemble groups in Hong Kong such as the Hong Kong Youth Symphony Orchestra, Hong Kong Chamber Wind Philharmonia, Hong Kong Symphonic Band, Hong Kong New Music Ensemble, etc. Virgil presented his own recital “Sempre·Always” in 2020 with great success. He is also one of the founders of the Première Quartet Hong Kong. Their debut concert received favorite reviews. Virgil also participated in several saxophone masterclasses with Chia-hsiu Tsai, Dr. Kenneth Tse, Noboya Sugawa, Vincent David, Andy Scott, Philippe Geiss, etc. In the past few years, he has been to Finland and Europe to study classical saxophone performance with world-renowned saxophonists including Joonatan Rautiola, Amit Dubester, Alvaro Collao Léon etc. In 2024, Virgil will premiere a commissioned work by Satoshi Yagisawa.

Virgil is also active in conducting field. He served as the student conductor of his school choir, symphonic band and orchestra. His conducting mentors include Colin Touchin and Ho-man Choi. He has attended in several masterclasses and workshops with Jorma Panula, Jukka-Pekka Saraste, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Neeme Järvi, Jaap van Zweden, Lio Kuokman, etc. Collaborating with several local music ensembles including the Academy Symphony Orchestra, Hong Kong Youth Chamber Wind Philharmonia, Tranquilo Collective Hong Kong, etc.
