The torch for the 1st National Youth Games travels in a whole new way, i.e. through the cyberspace to 59 cities across China. Rongrong, the mascot of the Games, started the online torch relay in July this year. After visiting more than 20 cities, the torch departs Haidian District, Beijing for Hong Kong on 12 August.

Located at the heart of Asia, Hong Kong has been one of the world's major trading ports for over 170 years. Today, Hong Kong is not only an international financial centre, but also a significant player in areas such as commerce, tourism, aviation, shipping and logistics, all of which help reinforce our status as Asia's World City. A melting pot of Eastern and Western cultures and with good transport infrastructure, Hong Kong plays host to a variety of international sports events. All these advantages contribute to the development of sports in our city.

With hard work and dedication, Hong Kong athletes have achieved remarkable results in major sports events in recent years. For example, our athletes gained 56 and 42 medals in the Tianjin 2013 East Asian Games and the Incheon 2014 Asian Games respectively. Despite its limited size, Hong Kong has nurtured many world-renowned athletes including windsurfer LEE Lai-shan, nicknamed the “queen of wind”, runner SO Wa-wai, nicknamed the “wonder kid”, cyclists WONG Kam-po and LEE Wai-sze, known as “Hong Kong’s treasure” and the “Bike Goddess of Lower Ngau Tau Kok Estate”, to name a few, who have made impressive strides in the international sports arena. Determined to match their senior counterparts, our young athletes have been fully geared up for the 1st National Youth Games to be held in Fujian this October. The Hong Kong delegation, comprising more than 200 budding athletes, will surely do their utmost in the games and strive for the best results for themselves and for Hong Kong.
