Miraculous Snap Sho(o)t: Chan Pei’s Directing Skills
Chan Pei worked in Hong Kong film industry from pre-war to post-war for 30 years with over 150 repertoires. He was among those termed as directors of “seven-day Cantonese quickies”, but we cannot simply criticises his works were shoddily made since his films were welcomed by many at his times. This seminar will take a snapshot on two aspects of his directing skills: his ability in combining film language with performing skills, incorporating both improvisation and traditional performance; his skills in selecting the right plots and the right talents for his works.
