The 12th National Games held in Liaoning Province concluded today (September 12). The Hong Kong Delegation achieved remarkable results, bringing home one gold, three silver and three bronze - seven medals in total.
The gold medal was won by Miss Lee Wai-sze in the women's cycling track - keirin event. The three silver medals came from the rugby team, the golf team and Miss Jacqueline Lai in the showjumping individual competition, while the three bronze medals were won by Mr Chan Chun-hing in the men's mountain bike event, Mr Nicholas Choi in men's foil in the fencing event and Mr Cheung King-lok in cycling men's individual time trial event.
The Secretary for Home Affairs, Mr Tsang Tak-sing, praised the Hong Kong athletes for their strenuous efforts which achieved great results for Hong Kong, demonstrating their strong determination and sportsmanship.
"The National Games is the country's highest level sports event, with top-notch athletes participating in various highly competitive events," he said.
"It is absolutely a formidable task for Hong Kong athletes to compete against such excellent athletes and win those seven medals."
The 12th National Games started on August 31 in Liaoning Province and concluded after the closing ceremony today.
Hong Kong sent 223 athletes to participate in 20 final competitions at the 12th National Games. The competitions were aquatics, archery, athletics, badminton, canoeing, cycling, equestrian, fencing, golf, gymnastics, men's handball, judo, rugby, windsurfing, shooting, table tennis, tennis, triathlon, beach volleyball and wushu taolu. Golf and rugby were newly added this year.
