The booming development of Tseung Kwan O has transformed the district into an ideal residence for many young families, and the district now has a population that exceeds four-hundred thousand (400,000) people. To meet the needs of the district’s growing demand, the LCSD has committed itself to planning more leisure and cultural facilities in Tseng Kwan O. Two such facilities, the Tiu Keng Leng Sports Centre and Public Library, were officially opened to the public on 7 September 2015 so that citizens could thoroughly enjoy the pleasures of reading and exercising.
Tiu Keng Leng Sports Centre is home to the district’s first international sports climbing competition standard compliant outdoor climbing wall. Once you have obtained the relevant sport climbing training certificate recognised by the NSAs, you can challenge yourself on the three lanes, each with a different level of climbing difficulty, or use the two lanes especially designed to train your climbing speed. The multi-purpose arena in the sports centre can be used as basketball courts, volleyball courts or badminton courts. Other facilities include multi-purpose rooms, an indoor jogging track, a children's playroom, and a fitness room.
Apart from above-mentioned facilities which require advance booking, the Sports Centre also has a two-storey open space of one hectare that is open all day for free. Citizens can relax in the landscaped gardens or the lawn, or they can use the fitness corner for the elderly, the fitness station or the children's playground etc. LCSD will organize monthly sports activities and training classes at the Sports Centre and we welcome citizens’ enthusiastic participation.
Adjacent to the sports centre, the three-storey Tiu Keng Leng Public Library occupies more than 2,900 square metres and provides a wide range of services and facilities. It includes an Adult and Children’s Library, a Newspapers and Periodicals Section, a Students' Study Room, quick reference section, an Extension Activities Room, a Computer and Information Centre, a Multimedia Information System, Internet and digital service workstations, and reading area. The express return service and self-service book borrowing and renewal service makes it faster and easier for readers to borrow and return books.
The library has a collection of about 170,000 items, and offers more than 140 local and overseas newspapers and periodical titles for readers with different interests. A wide range of extension activities are organised on a regular basis to promote reading among the public: storytelling for children, book displays and subject talks etc. Schools and members of cultural and educational organisations are welcome to contact the library for group visits to learn more about its facilities and services.
